Rural will be m Holv Cross cemetery Sister Mary Josepn was born in Baltimore, and served as sister superior at S. Vincent s hospital from 1009 to 1927. when she was retired. Since that time she has continued at the hospital, visiting patients. She came to Indianapolis m 1883. after six months in the seminary of the Sisters of Charity in Emm itsburg, Md. Sister Mary Joseph worked in the old St. Vincent's hospital on South street, spent a year as sister superior of St. Mary's hospital. Evansville, and returned to St. Vincent's hospital here. Among her souvenirs was an autographed photograph of former President Theodore Roosevelt, w he sent her after spending one day as a patient in the old St. Vincent's hospital. Surviving Sister Marv Joseph are a brother. A. J. Sehiffer. Wheeling. W. V. and two sisters. Sister Mary j Anastasia. Pittsburgh, and Mrs. Fred Boekler, Los Angeles. Marie Moeschlein Dies The funeral of Miss Marie Moeschlem. 70. who died yesterday in St. Anthony's home, Lafayette, will be held at 8:30 Saturday in the Voight funeral home, and at 9 in Sacred Heart church, of which she was a member. Burial will be in St. Joseph s cemetery. Miss Moeschlem was born in Germany. She had been a resident of Indianapolis thirty years, and for ten years had lived in St. Anthony's j home. Powell. 77, retired carpenter and contractor, who died yesterday in his home. 2205 North New Jersey street, will be held at 2 to- ' morrow in the Clyde V. Montgomery j funeral home. 160 VIGILANTES HOLD PRACTICE Pistol and Rifle Instruction Sponsored by Bankers’ Association. One hundred sixty vigilantes, representing thirty counties throughout Indiana, received instruction this morning on the Ft. Benjamin Harrison pistol range, as a part of the eighth annual target practice sponsored by the Indiana Bankers Association. Practice on the rifle range was held this afternoon, following an army lunch, at which the men were greeted by Colonel Oliver P. Robinson. Eleventh infantry commander. Field practice was under the direction of Captain Frederick V. Edgerton. The men taking part include bankers, drivers of armored trucks, and persons living in close proximity to banks, who have been selected by their local banks and sworn in as deputy sheriffs. The practice is sponsored by the association in an effort to curtail bank robberies and to reduce the rate of insurance paid by banks. CIVIC CLUB TO HEAR MAYOR CANDIDATES Sullivan Also Asked to Talk on Track Elevation. Mayor Reginald H. Sullivan, and John W, Kern and Walter Pritchard. Democratic and Republican candidates, respectively, for mayor, will be invited to express their views on track elevation at a meeting of the central committee of south side civic clubs in Tolin’s undertaking parlor Oct. 3. It was decided to ask them to the special session at last night's meeting at which track elevation was a much-debated subject. A resolution demanding that Indianapolis police take action to break up gangs congregating on south side street corners and in Garfield park at night was adopted. The gangs were referred to as incubators of crime by Walter C. Fothcrmel. committee president, who stated that they are composed largely of youths under 21. OR. Ranks Vote to Meet as Long as One Man Survives. L nit* *i Prrug LEBANON, Ind., Sept. 20 —Their ranks thinned by death, a dozen survivors of the one-time stalwart company which represented Indiana in the Civil war. today were on record favoring meeting as long as there is a lone remaining veteran Meeting here yesterday, a dozen aging veterans helped two .sole survivors of the Tenth Indiana regiment celebrate the annua! reunion of the Tenth. Fortieth and Eightysixth regiments. When roll call was sounded. John Rishel, Lafayette, and Benjamin Cohee. Lebanon, answered, being the only two of four surviving members of the Tenth regiment to attend. Cyrus Clark, Frankfort. and George Dexter, Mulberry, are the only other known survivors of the famous Tenth regiment. Neither was able to attend the reunion. For the first time since the reunions were started neither the Fortieth nor Eighty-sixth regiments were represented. The remainder of those who attended the reunion were from other regiments, including John F. McKinley, Elizaville. commander of the G. A. R- and Adjutant-General J. b. Henninger, Indianapolis, and a number of relatives and friends of the veterans. CCC APPLICATIONS TO BE TAKEN OCT 1-20 Order of Filing Not Essential, Wayne Coy. Applications for fall and winter memberships in the Civilian Conservation Camps will be taken from Oct. 1 to Oct. 20 at 60 West New York street, Wayne Coy, unemployment relief commission director, said today. Early registration will have no bearing on acceptances and men registering on the final day will have as much chance as those first to sign applications. All applicants must be registered and be interviewed until the quota is reached. HENRY FARB,‘BOSS of bowery; slain Killed by Gangsters After Visit Here. Only a few' hours after he had returned to New York City from a visit here, Henry Farb. known to police and the underworld as "the boss of the Bowery,” was murdered by gangster bullets last night as he sat in front of the grill and barroom he operated near the Chinatown section of lower New York. Farb had been visiting three cousing here. One of them, A1 Farb, a bondsman, said the New Yorker had expected to stay here for Yom Kippur worship yesterday, but had returned to the eastern city Tuesday on receipt of a letter, apparently from his w r ife. Other cousins living here are Nate and Laskv Farb. Henry Farb was 39 years old. He was known throughout the Bowery for his benevolence to down-and-outers.
4 ALLEGED ‘BOOKIE’ PLACES RAIDED HERE Telephones Are Seized; No Arrests Made. Swoopine down on four alleged race bookmaking establishments police today had in their possession a first-class collection of racing charts and telephones torn from their standards, but no alleged “bookies.” Players in three of the alleged bookmaking places were chased. Furniture in one place was stacked, racing forms seized, and private race news wires torn from walls and the phones taken. Lieutenant Noel Jones, leading the raiding squads, said today, “I know what they're doing in those places. We made no arrests. We merely chased the players and confiscated the race forms.” NEGRO ORGANIZER TO SPEAK BEFORE TEMPLE October Meeting Sponsored by Scottsboro Group.
