SPEEDWAY CITY SCHOOL OOARD HELD IN ERROR Lutz Ruling Favors Parents in Dispute on Pupil Transfer. A decisive point in the bitter dispute between the Speedway City school board and parents of grade school graduates in that cornmutiny was made today as Philip Lutz Jr., attorney-general, ruled the suburb's school board must permit pupils of high school age to be transferred to Indianapolis high schools. The ruling states that if there is no commissioned high school in a town the school authorities shall grant transfers to pupils to a commissioned school. Parents of several grade school graduates have organized a citizens school committee to fight the declaration of the school board that it would not permit transfers and that the pupils must attend the two-year uncommissioned high school at Speedway City. Astors Exchange Smiles; Society Lifts Eyebrows Is the Providence Tiff Over? ‘The Public Be Damned.’ Hints John Jacob 111 in New York. By Vnitr4 /Vr** NEW YORK. Sept. 20,—The smiles which John Jacob Astor 111 and his wife, the former Ellen Tuck French, exchanged during the wedding of Miss Joan Blake and Henry Harjes, were the subject of society whispers today. The interpretation was that in spite of their reported stormy parting in Providence, R. 1., last Sunday, they now were on friendly terms.
The Astors were the center of a near-riot at the wedding, one of the most fashionable of the season. Long before the wedding party arrived at the Church of the Heavenly Rest, a non-society crowd of several hundred jammed the neighborhood, to witness the first public appearance of the Astors since the Providence incident. During the ceremony, Mrs. Astor was seen to smile at her husband. He grinned, then blushed.

Mrs. Astor was nearly mobbed on leaving the church by spectators seeking a better view of her. Astor came out of a side entrance. Asked for a statement for the public he replied: “You may remember a relatve of one of mv ancestors once said something abhßlit the public.” The late Commodore William H. Vanderbilt is credited with the statement: "The public be damned.”
