MEMBER DRIVE TO B E STARTED FOR SYMPHONY Five Regular Concerts on Schedule for Year to Be Heard Here. The annual membership drive of the Indiana State Symphony Society on behalf of the Indianapolis symphony orchestra, will begin Monday. Oct 1. with a noon luncheon at the Athenaeum, af which Robert A Adams will be the guest speaker Five regular concerts have been schedu’ed this year for the orchestra. . according to Mrs. Elsa PanUer Haerle. manager. Two out-of-town engagements will be played also, one at Ball State TeacherE' college and one at Purdue universlts*. where the organization has become an annual visitor. The five local concerts will be played Oct 23, Dec. 4. Jan 22. Feb. 26, and April 2 These concerts will be- played on Tuesday evenings at the Murat theater. There will also be several children’s concerts, the dates for which have not been set. The new directors, appointed this year for the society, are as follows Mrs Earl Barns. Mr. Schaefer, who just has returned from a trip through Germany, purchased several wellknown selections while there which the orchestra will play during the season. These scores include Brahms’ fourth symphony. Tschaikowsky’s fifth symphony. Dvorak’s New World symphony, and the C Major symphony by Schubert. Holohan today reported prison guards had frustrated an elaborate escape plot involving James Kirk, lifetermer sentenced for the kidnaping of William Gettle. Los Angeles millionaire. Kirk and Edward E. Holley. 29, serving a Ion*; term for robbery, tried to saw their way out from the old west cellhouse after trading cells with two other prisoners, Mr Holo- | han said. All four were thrown into dungeons while authorities investigated the method by which Kirk and his companion obtained the six hacksaws found in the cell. VFW WILL CELEBRATE 35TH ANNIVERSARY State Posts to Meet for Picnic at Northern Beach. The thirty-fifth anniversary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be celebrated Sunday at Northern Woods beach when the Marion county council of Veterans of Foreign Wars entertain members of the VFW and auxiliary members at a picnic. Posts throughout the state will be represented at the picnic. Lee King, commander of the Frank T. Strayer post, is chairman of the picnic committee.

Ivadelle Jacobs Miss Ivadelle Jacobs, here shown astride her spirited pony, Buck, will be one of the contenders for the cowgirl's bronc-riding championship. when the Worlds Championship Rodeo, under the direction of Colonel W T. Johnson, opens at the Indiana state fairground coliseum next Tuesday night. Miss Jacobs is a native of Merriman, Neb., and was a recent prizewinner in the Detroit rodeo. She also took part in the London, England show last July. The blond cowgirl arrived in Indianapolis ahead of the regular company and has been spending the days preceding the show in her own little tent pitched on the fairground, just east of the grandstand.

By Timet Special CR AWFORDSVILLE, Sept. 18— Following a plea of guilty to second degree murder, Walter Scott, 50, former Frankfort policeman, is waiting in the Montgomery county Jail here to be transferred to the Indiana state prison for a life term. On March 21 Scott, armed with a revolver, shot down Mrs. Esther Lockwood, 28, and her brother-in-law, Russell Wells, 33, both of Oxford, on a street In Lafayette. • Scott declares he never has told the true story of the motive for the double slaying stating he fears it would embarrass innocent persons. He has stated that he feared Mr. Wells intended to “get” him but refused to explain why.

Sept. 19.— Among cases dismissed from the Boone Circuit court docket is one filed fourteen years ago. The case, seeking damages, was brought here on a change of venue from Marion county and was dismissed for lack of prosecution. Plaintiff was Edward E. Duty, and defendants were Rich & Wolcott, Inc., Harry D. Winnie and Milton L. Collings.
