Soaring to a seventeen-mile height over Chicago, in the first manless stratosphere flight, this flftcen-fcot baby balloon carried an eightpound gondola containing scientific instruments which recorded data that may yield new cosmic ray secrets. It was sent aloft by Professor Arthur H. Compton. Nobel prize-winning physicist, shown beside the radio receiving set which recorded signals flashed by the transmitter in the gondola.

FAMOUS CIVIL WAR BRIGADE CONVENES Twelve Survivors Attend Reunion Here. The forty-ninth reunion of the famous "Persimmon” brigade was celebrated by its twelve surviving members at Ft. Friendly yesterday. The brigade was composed of the One hundred fifteenth. One hundred sixteenth, One hundred seventeenth and One hundred eighteenth Indiana infantry regiments during the Civil war. Elihu Morgan, 92 years old, of Mooresville, was the oldest veteran present. Members of the Major Robert Anderson Women's Relief Corps served dinner at noon to "Persimmon” brigade members and also to veterans of the Twenty-sixth Indiana volunteer regiment, who simultaneously held their annual reunion as guests of Frank Shellhouse, son of Conrad Shellhouse. a member of the regiment. Preliminary arrangements for the golden jubilee reunion of the Persimmon brigade next year were discussed. A history of the brigade has been compiled from various official documents and diaries and will be presented to an Indiana historical society after the last reunion.
