Bp Unit'd Pm* NEW YORK, Aug. 24—The fu- j slon administration, deaf to the an- I ger of business, today rushed toward j final enactment of the new of 1 per cent tax on gross business receipts to raise $30,000,000 for unemployment relief. The bill, sponsored by Mayor F. H. La Guardia, passed the board of estimate branch of the municipal! assembly yesterday with only George U. Harvey, Republican, dis-' anting. Democrats supported the measure because they expect its unpopularity will injure the fusion cause. The measure now goes to the board of aldermen. Final passage Is scheduled for Tuesday. The present tax on business gross receipts is 1-20 of 1 per cent, with exemptions of $15,000. Under the new schedule, the exemption would be lowered to $5,000. "I personally assume responsibility for this particular tax.” Mayor La Guardia said when informed that : business interests were mobilizing in ! opposition to the levy. "I know my j associates on the board of estimate i want to share with me in caring for J the unemployed, and not leave them to shift for themselves. “It must not be forgotten that the almost $18,000,000 spent on relief here every month benefits business, j since that money is spent here ;m- | mediately for the necessities of life.” j POTENTIAL JOBS ARE ANNOUNCED FOR 93,280 Work Projects Handicapped by Necessary Planning. Work projects under the federal emergency relief administration program in Indiana have a potential employe capacity of 93.280. it was announced today by the Governor s commission on unemployment re- ; lief. This does not mean, however,! that there will bp any immediate increase in employment on this work, since it is necessary to plan many projects ahead to keep jobs available for those already employed and thoee who have recently completed projects.
