Playground News — CITY PLAYLOT SEASON ENDS: 8 STAY OPEN Pools Not to Close Until After Labor Day; Swim Meet Set. . All parks and playgrounds will close next Thursday, with the ex- * ception of eight of the largest parks - Brookside, Willard. Riverside, * Garfleld, Ellenberger, Christian. Douglas and Rhodius. The pools will stay open through Labor day to accommodate the throngs of holiday pleasure seekers. Equipment from the eight largest parks will be stored away Sept. 3, - to await repainting and repairing before next spring. * Willard stands out as the best softball team in the city after lash- * ing Fall Creek, 8 to 5, in the final game. To win the crown, the Willard •ggregation waded through all opponent in the East Side League . and then trounced Rhodius, 14 to 7, in the semi-finals. Fall Creek won the right to compete in the championship game by downing Finch, 12 to 10. The spark-olug of the Willard team. Lody O was awarded * * .e sportsmanship medal for displaying the best mental attitude and plaving ability during the senes. After watching him perform at the catcher's position, baseball experts believe that he should go far in the diamond sport after he Is graduated from the sandlot class. In the Junior series, the hardhitting Riley club sank the Willard crew. 5 to 2. in the final game. Riley previously walloped Fall Creek. 18 to 3, while Willard smashed into the finals with a 0 to 1 victory over Coleman. More than seventy-five swimmers will line up tomorrow’ afternoon at Garfield park for the elimination heats in the outdoor swimming championship of the city. James W. Clark. American Red Crass swimming director, has scheduled eleven events for boys and similar events for girls. Among the events will be the 25meter free style and back stroke races; 50-meter free style, bark stroke and breast stroke heats; 100meter free style, back stroke and breast stroke heats; 200-meter free style heat and the 200-meter relay. There also will be a senior high diving contest open both to boys and girls. After the elimination contests tomorrow’ afternoon, the winners will compete at 2 Sunday for the city championship awards and for possession of the Jack Shaffer Memorial trophy, given to the swimmer amassing the most points in the senior events. Trfhight in the outdoor theater at Garfleld park more than 800 children and adults will participate in the playground pageant, "The Night of Terror.” The pageant starts at 7:45 and a capacity crowd is expected. This year's pageant was written by Muss Norma Koster, recreation superviser, and is considered the outstanding event of the recreation season. The children have rehearsed for weeks. The pageant is packed full of romance, adventure and thrills. Added to the colorful setting and brilliant costumes, a musical theme provided by she Brookside chorus will run throughout.
