Impressive Program Is Scheduled by Circle

THE last week of the current movie season will be ushered in tomorrow at the Circle by Marlene Dietrich in “The Scarlet Empress.'' This Dietrich movie was directed by Josef von Sternberg and has the acting services of John Lodge. Sam JafTe. Louise Dresser and C. Aubrey Smith. ENGRAVERS TO CLOSE NATIONAL CONVENTION Code Discussion, Dinner, Dance on Final Program Here. Final business sessions of the International Photo-Engravers Union annual convention were held today at the Severin. Newspaper codes, photo-engravers and graphic arts were discussed at yesterday’s session. Louis Flader, Chicago, Employing Engravers’ Association commissioner, was principal speaker, explaining phases of the economic recovery program and their influence on the industry. Matthew Woll, union vice-president, presided. Annual banquet of the organization will be held in the Severin roof garden tonight. Dance music will be provided by Ed Resener's orchestra. ROUNDS 25-YEAR MARK John R. Goulding Now Eligible for Phone Company Medal. John R. Goulding, 4916 Caroline avenue, today became eligible to receive the twenty-five-year service emblem of the Indiana Bell Telephone Company. Mr. Goulding started work for the telephone company as a splicer's helper in August, 1909.

CAPONE BEGINS ORDEAL IN GRIM ISLAND PRISON Gangster Is Transferred to End Contact With Old Chicago Mob. By United Pre* SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 22.—As isolated from the world as though he were a castaway on a desert isle, Alphonse (Scarface Al) Capone, once the nation's No. 1 gangster, began anew 7 type of existence today in the new 7 federal prison on Alcatraz island. The new prison, already called “American Devil's island,” is designed to cut off its inmates completely from contacts with the rest of the world. Federal authorities, charged with keeping Capone six more years on an income tax violation conviction, desired this isolation for the former gangland leader. That is why he is here, along with sixty-six others. Eventually, the number will be increased to 200. Gloomy old Alcatraz stands a mile and one-fourth from the nearest shore. Watch towers project from the castlelike battlements of its prison buildings. In those towers are steel-eyed guards with highpowered rifles. No boat, no swimmer. no airplane may approach within 300 yards. Signs in the day | and lights at night warn visitors not to come near. Already the legend of its complete isolation, of the close guard over its shores, is spreading. There is a tale told along the w r aterfront of a sportsman whose small catboat sprung a leak near Alcatraz last week, but was not permitted to land. The justice department took over the prison to house two types of felons—those whose sole thought is of escape—and those who attempt to maintain contact with friends outside. Capone falls into the latter class. He was transferred here from Atlanta, where, it is said, the officials failed to prevent him from maintaining underworld contacts. Brother Is Arrested By Times Special CHICAGO, Aug. 23.—While Alphonse (Scarface) Capone was grumbling about his new accommodations at the government’s Devil’s island in San Francisco bay, Chicago authorities raided a flat in suburban Berwyn and seized ten men, including Ralph Capone, his brother, and Stanley Konvalinka, Cicero politician, who angrily charged that the raid was inspired by politics. The flat where the raid was staged was rented to Konvalinka several weeks ago as headquarters for his campaign for state senator, police said. Capone and the politicians denied they were forcing saloon keepers to buy a certain brand of beer. NATURE CLUB MARKS 200 CHIMNEY SWIFTS Club Members Seek Data on Haunts of Millersville Birds. The bin* banding section of the Nature Study Club of Indiana banded approximately 200 chimney swifts in Millersville this week.
