No Jew ... may be a member of the nation." Soviet Russia has announced her readiness to enter the League of Nations at the Geneva assembly beginning two weeks from next Monday This means anew European concert is nearing completion If Hitler—who is now Germany —accepts the proffered invitation and joins that concert. Europe shortly will be criss-crossed by a series of mutual security pacts safeguarding the peace of that part of the world for years to come. Force May Be Necessary If, on the contrary’, he insists upon his pan-Germanic, anti-treaty, anti-Jewish program, he will find himrelf definitely surrounded by one of the most powerful coalitions of all time. Thus hemmed in. he would stay there until he rould hew his wav out. either by skillful diplomacy, superior force, or a combination of the two. Hitler has indicated he may temporarily abandon his Nazi platform. In his Hindenburg oration he said Germany was satisfied with her present frontiers. In European capitals he is believed anxious to gain for himself and for Germany some vitally valuable time. The threatening coalition against Germany is the result of fear of Hitlerism. By aligning Germany with the rest of Europe within the proposed peace pacts, he would tend to reduce that fear. France, leader of the coalition, is seething with discontent. The riots about the rhamber of deputies last February were, in effect a revolution which barely failed to come off. But for the specter of Nazi Germanv preparing to strike from across the Rhine. France might become the victim of political chaos at home. Austria Seeks Aid Poland, ally of France on the other side of Germany, is tiring of the French apron string. A little careful courting in the right kind of atmosphere during the next few years might win her over to Germany. There never has been much love lost between Italy and France. If Hitler could persuade Mussolini that he has given up his schemes for union with Austria. Berlin and Rome might come to an understanding. Chancellor Schuschnigg of Austria is touring Italy and France to line up those powers in support of Austrian independence. Many believe he is negotiating secretly for Franco-Itahan support of Archduke Otto as head of anew monarchy—perhaps an Austro-Hungar-ian monarchy—to save his country from Germany. Further moves against Austrian independence would start Italian troops marching within twenty-four hours. It has become a matter of months, at most, therefore, before Hitler will have to decide which road he will take: The road to peace or the road to war.
