HEREDITY PLAYS PART IN BIRTH OF MULTIPLES Blonds More Likely to Have Quintuplets Than Brunet Women. Thl* i th* fifth at a ttriti of aix artl'lr. on multiple birth* Btt t* met S'rr> ire Do you ant to know the chances for having a multiple birth in your own family? The likelihood depends partly on whether you already have a history of twins or triplets in the family. Most multiple births occur in a family which has known them before, either on the fathers cr mother's side. The ace of the mother affects the chances for a multiple birth. It is mo t likely when the mother is between the age* of 35 and 40. The number of children already Jiorn to the mother does not seem to make any difference. The race of the parents seems to affect the chances. The Nordic races have more multiple births than do the Alpines or Mediterraneans. Blonds are more likely to have the double blessed event than are brunets. Can the physician tell before the birth how many are coming? It is reported that Dr. Dafoe, the physician who so successfully brought the Dionne five into the world, did not know beforehand of their multiplicity. Ordinarily, however, it is possible for the physician to diagnose the condition when the mother has more than one child. He can hear more than one heart beat from the infants; he can perhaps detect more than one head; and if he has the aid of the X-ray, he can see more than one skeleton. If there are triplets. though, he will be very likely to think they are twins. Dr. Dafoe did not see the Dionne mother until one week before the birth of the infants, and at that time, because of a special condition, the diagnosis of multiplicity could not be made. The mother who is under the care of a physician before the birth is most likely to be forewarned if she is to have twins or quintuplets. ‘Drought Cattle’ Killed by Thousands in City
I Slaughter Program Stepped Up Due to Congestion in Other Places. With millions of acres of grazing land in the middle west devastated by the drought, federal officials announced today that they would speed up the cattle slaughtering program at the local stockyards. More than 10.000 cattle were slaughtered at the Indianapolis Stockyards in July as a relief measure to aid farmers in droughtstricken areas. Although the program was scheduled to terminate at the end of July, the ravaging effects of the recent heat wave has forced the government to increase the butchering program between fifty and 100 cattle a day locally, Dr. C. L. Elliott, head of the United States animal husbandry division here. said. The meat from the butchered cattle will be canned, after government inspection, and distributed to relief organizations. Dr. Elliott said that recent surveys show that there is not enough food and grazing pastures left in the middle west to feed the cattle. "The government feels that it is better to obtain the meat for poor relief rather than to have the cattle starve to death,” the federal official added. Most of the cattle are shipped here from the devastated areas of the Dakotas and Wisconsin, he said. Due to the congested conditions of the stockyards at Chicago, St. Louis and Kansas City, the duties at the local yards have increased. The recent stockyard strike at Chicago necessitated local officials working day and night in order to take over part of the Chicago slaughtering program. The cattle are being slaughtered

Aug. 11.—On the ground that it is the first duty of newsdealers to distribute "the treasures of German thought," the government warned hawkers today against displaying foreign papers more prominently than German, or “using any other sales methods calculated to further the distribution of foreign newspapers and periodicals.” Foreign newspapers recently have had a tremendous sale in Germany, the native press being restricted severely in what it may print.

BUSINESS NEWS FOR THE WEEK
J. A. HOGSHIRE GAS STATION IN NEWLOCATION Criteria Agent Features Money-Saving Pump Device. Starting in business in Indianapolis over a year ago, J. A. Hogshire & Son, Inc., are now located at 126 West Sixteenth street, between Capitol avenue and Illinois street, with a modern service station featuring their individual brand Criteria Anti-Knock gasoline and 100% Pure Pennsylvania motor oil at popular prices. Prior to coming to Indianapolis. J. A. Hogshire & Son were located in Lebanon, Ind., where they engaged in the oil business in Boone and adjoining counties. In 1929 they sold their business. From that time to the starting of their new business here, Mr. Hogshire was employed by a major oil company in various capacities. He is thus well qualified in this line of business. The Criteria station is outstanding in that the most modern equipment has been used throughout. It was perhaps the first to feature the new adding machine computing pumps in the city. The computing pumps accurately measure the smallest fraction of a gallon. They save the customers money as they are always assumed of receiving exactly what they pay for without the usual ’i cent losses which usually occur in the computation of multiple gallons where tenths of a cent are involved. The name Criteria as a brand name means “Standards of Quality." At the present time the Criteria gasoline is sold in one grade only. It is a red pre-lubricated an-ti-knock gasoline and retails at the lowest prevailing prices. Criteria 100 per cent pure Pennsylvania motor oils are made in accordance with the rigid specifications set up by the Pennsylvania Grade Crude Oil Association, yet tl?e retail price is much lower than the wholesale prices of most advertised Pennsylvania oils. By doing no wholesale business and selling direct to the retail trade these remarkable pi-oducts are sold at the lowest prices. The policy of this company is to sell only the best at the lowest prices, to give every one their money’s worth, and a money-back guarantee against any misrepresentation. OFFERS TIME PAYMENTS Rite’s Shops Announces Innovation in Watch Repairing. Payment of watch repairing bills on the installment plan is a new' service announced by Rite’s Shops, Inc., 43-45 South Illinois street. PASTE LACKING IN BATH TISSUE OF LOCAL FIRM Sealskin Bars Use of Substance as Possible Infection Source. Until recently little or no attention was paid to the part which paste can play in interfering with the safety and sanitation of a bathroom tissue. Yet, when one 1 considers the very nature of paste, it can be seen that its use can be decidedly dangerous in a product which must be absolutely pure if danger is to be avoided and health conserved. When a bathroom tissue is properly safeguarded, it is kept absolutely clean during and after the process of manufacture. No foreign substance which can possibly | transfer germs to it may be allowed jto touch it. Yet paste is such a | foreign substance, in a liquid or semi-liquid form in which germs can easily thrive. Logically, then, says a foremost maker of tissues, omitting paste from the tissue-roll is to eliminate one source of danger and contamination. In addition, dried paste, no matter how sanitary it may be. acquires harsh, rough edges. A particle of this harsh, dried paste can easily scratch delicate skin, opening up a source of infection which can leave not only uncomfortable sores, but under some circumstances actually can interfere with health. It was to overcome these dangers that the self-opening feature of Sealskin Bathroom Tissue—an In-dianapolis-made product—was developed. Not only no paste is used in finishing the Sealskin roll, but the tissue-wrapper, with its self-open-ing tab, keeps out dust, and dirt and | makes Sealskin a most sanitary tisi sue from every point of view.
