CRIMINALS TURN U. S. GUNS UN LAW AGENCIES Robberies of Weapons From Loosely-Guarded Arsenals Called ‘Appalling.’ fl* t'n tr 4 Pm, WASHINGTON. Aug. 10-Army and national guard arsenals have become a major source of supply for high-powered weapons for the underworld. Daring bandits and gangsters whom the government is trying to wipe out have raided national guard armories time after time and turned the government's own weapons against it. The number of army weapons seized by criminals in raids on loosely guarded national guard arsenals was described by one official as ■'appalling.” Authorities were completing a survey today designed to show the exact extent of such seizures. Weapons known to have been obtained by outlaws in such raids included a number of Browning automatic rifles. With a range of three miles, this type of high-powered rifle that fires with machine gun rapidity u one of the most deadly weapons ever devised. Barrow Had Brownings The Browning gun is so powerful that it is used only by the army. None ever has been made available for any civil law enforcement agency. Three Browning rifles were m the arsenal assembled by Clyde Barrow, southwestern desperado shot down recently in Louisiana. Revolvers and other firearms also have been obtained from national guard stores. It is understood that a protest was made to the war department some time ago over the apparent laxity in protecting national guard armories. National guard units are state organizations, but they are under supervision of the war department and most of their arms are supplied through the federal government. With federal law enforcement officials anxious to do everything possible to cut off the underworld's supply of arms, it seemed likely that the situation would again be brought to the attention of the war department with a request for action. Registration Required Under the machine gun law passed by the last congress, the internal revenue bureau has just issued regulations requiring all manufacturers, importers and dealers in machine guns and sawed-off shotguns to register with the government. The law required such registration by Aug. 10. but the bureau said no penalties would be imposed until after Sept. 1. All sales of such weapons hereafter must be reported, together with fingerprints and other data concerning the purchaser. All present owners of such arms must register them by Oct. 1. Justice department officials are somewhat doubtful as to how effective this law will prove, but it is believed that gradually the new system may help.
