WATER YOUR TREES, URGES ENTOMOLOGIST Borer Menaces* Timber Throughout State. Says Wallace. Trees of the state must be well watered if they hope to defeat the attack of a tree borer now prevalent in Indiana, according to Frank N. Wallace, state entomologist, today. Newly planted trees are especially susceptible to the borer. The long dry summer has sapped the newly planted trees of their vitality. Strong, healthy trees are better able to resist the pests, Mr. Wallace said.

WAR TODAY WOULD BE SUICIDE, SAYS POPE National Egotism Threatens Peace, Declares P.us XI. By X'nitrd Prcm PARIS, Aug. 10—The civilized world is ‘‘almost certain” to commit suicide if it engages in war at this time, Pope Pius said in an interview published today in the Petit Journal. “It is difficult, not to say im-
possible,” the pope is quoted as saying, “that peace can endure between peoples and states if national egotism, rather than pure patriotism, prevails. We can not believe, however, that the modern civilized state seeks to exist by means of a monstrous homicide —and at the same time almost certainly commit suicide.” Since becoming an independent state in 1831 Belgium has had but four kings.
