‘FRENCH LEAVE’ IS NOT ESCAPE, M’NUTT CLAIMS ‘Eloping Convict’ at State Prison Just Walkaway, Governer Repeats. Denial that 'French leave* of Alonzo Sinker, state prison con net, from one of the prison honor farms, is an escape, was voiced today by Governor Paul V. McNutt. Sinker, a trusty, had been mussing four days when his absence was discovered yesterday afternoon by Michizan City newspaper men and subsequently admitted by prison officials. Striker, it was said, eloped with a woman understood to be the wife of a former superintendent of one of the prison farms Governor McNutt at first said he had no comment to make on the Stnker case. Then, however, he discussed it in the same tenor he has in previous walkaways. "It can't be called an escape,’ said the Governor. "It simply is a walkaway. There's nothing to escape from when a trusty merely takes French leave. The only way to prevent walkaways is to use a chain Rang system.” EIGHT CONVICTS FROM COUNTY ASK^ PAROLES Life Termer Is Included in List Seeking C lemency. One Marion county lifer is among the eight with parole petitions pending before the state clemency commission. He is Richard Parker, sentenced in 1930 to life imprisonment on a criminal assault conviction. A total of fifty-two petitions of prison and reformatory inmates are before the commission. Other Marion county men seeking clemency, serving lesser sentences for various offenses, are Everett Boyer, Jean Price. Kenneth Hunt, George Jones. Albert Sterett, William Brinson and James Monroe. BEER SELLER ARRESTED Police Charge City Man With Operating Lottery. Joe FarbinofT. 48. operator of a beer establishment at fi4B Indiana avenue, was arrested late last night on charges of operating a lottery and gift enterprise after Walter Greer. 50. Negro, 939 West Vermont street, had complained that he held a winning ticket in a baseball pool* purchased from Sarbinoff, and had not been paid.
