GROCERS REVIVE OLD-TIME PICNIC CUSTOM IN CITY 700 Independents Sponsor Columbia Park Outing Sunday. A community spirit long famous in Indianapol.s *UI be revved significantly Sunday with the renewal of the old-fashioned grocer's picnic, bringing together 700 independent grocers, their families and friends. The outing will be held in Columbia park on the south side, known years ago to joyfully congregating groups as Germania park. Underneath a grove of trees, the grocers and their guests will compete in unique contests. The program wil begin at 11 a. m. and will last until the last guest departs.
Visitors Are Invited Visitors are invited to join the crowd and bring their family baskets. Coffee, sandwiches ana drinks will be available for those who do not bring their own refreshments. Dancing will be provided in the afternoon and night at the pavilion for the young people and for the "oldsters" who wish to dance. In the afternoon, music will be furnished by tho Schlosesr Brothers phonograph amplifying truck and at night by a leading dance orchestra. The program has been arranged by Elmer Lay, entertainment chairman. and his committeemen. R. S. Harlan, William Yaegrr, H. L. Ottmger, Mrs. Helen L. She: man and L L. Thompson. ( nique Contests Slated Features of the entertainment will be a baseball game between the Weber Milk Company and the Rockwood Athletic Club and the awarding of prizes to the oldest active grocer present and the largest family present. The crowd will engage in such contests as nail driving for women, pie eating for children, potato spoon race for women, pillow fight for men, three-legged race between West and Purity baking employes, three-legged race for children, horseshoe pitching, cracker eating and whistling for boys, races for girls over 12 and boys under 10. race for all grocery clerks, fat man's race, tug-of-war between grocers and clerks, greased pie contests and a husband calling contest. The entertainment committee promises a day of community fellowship. BOY SCOUT MINSTREL SHOW OPENS TONIGHT Fifty Members of Cast Ready for Camp Entertainment. A cast of fifty Boy Scouts and senior camp staff members went through the final rehearsal of the camp minstrel show last night in preparation for the opening presentation tonight at the scout reservation. The show, beginning at 8. is an annual affair. Blackface numbers. Jokes, singing and music by the scout band will feature the entertainment. Following the show, eleven scouts will be initiated into the firecraft group, the highest rank in the camp award system.
