FRUIT GRANITES TAKE LEAD AS COOLING FOOD Syrup, Juice and Water Combined and Chilled to Near Freezing. Os all the delicious and simple concoctions in the category of summer food.', fruit granites come first. Chilled to the nth degree, without the actual forming of ice crystals, granites are refreshing and decidedly cooling. To make a granite a heavy syrup Is combined with fruit juice and water and the mixture is half frozen. It always is liquid enough to drink, but so thoroughly chilled that it just being an ice. Chill it it looks white with frost and ice crjs’als ga'h'r against the sid*s of the mold. The combinations are almost countless for these granites. All the canned fruits and mos s of the fresh ones can be used singly or in combination. The combination of fresh and canned fruit produces many novel flavors that are delightful. Jelly With Citrus Fruits You can also use jelly. Combine it with a citrus fruit juice. Orange, lemon, lime and grapefruit juices are all good and each produces a distinctive flavor. Currant jelly and orange juice, blackberry jelly and lemon juice, red raspberry and l;me—these are a few combinations that will suggest others to you. Use one large glass or standard measuring cup of jelly to one cup of fruit juice, one-half cup sugar ard three cups water. A tart juice such as lemon may require up to one cup of sugar. Make a syrup of the suenr and water by boiling for ten minutes. Arid jelly and wtvm cool add fruit juice. Strain and freeze. MEAT CLOAKED | IN VEGETABLES CUTS EXPENSE Less of Heat Producing Food Consumed as Mixture Result. Housewives who find it difficult to sell the idea of lots of the now inexpensive and fresh vegetables, instead of heat-producing meats, to the men of the family might try to overcome this dissension by adding some meat to the savory and economical greens. While too much meat is not advised by dieticians for summer menus, if just enough can be used in combination with vegetables to make them liked, a happy medium may be effected. If a half pound of meat can be ! made to serve four persons and at the same time provide a wholesome and adquate dinner, economy would prompt most women to give the dish a fair trial. For this a meat and vegetable hash is the simplest combination. Chowders and timbales also are at- j tractive and appetizing concoctions. Veal and carrot timbales, lamb and p*a timbales —these are worthy of a place on any economy menu. Meat and Vegetable Pie Casserole dishes are another excellent meat and vegetable combination. Meat and vegetable pies with potato crusts are another possibility. A meat and vegetable hash makes 1 ideal summer fare from the cook's standpoint. It takes care of two items on the menu, saving time, labor and dish washing. Meat and Vegetable Hash One-half pound round steak, one and one-half cups chopped raw carrots, two cups chopped raw potato, three onions, one cup milk, one tablespoon minced parsley, one teaspoon salt, one-quarter teaspoon pepper, coarse buttered crumbs. Put meat, carrots, potatoes and onions through food chopper. Mix thoroughly and add rmlk and seasoning. Put into a casserole, cover with buttered crumbs and bake one hour in a moderate oven <375 degrees F>. Hodge Podge One pound shoulder of lamb, one head lettuce, two cups peas, four or five green onions, two tablespoons butter, one teaspoon salt, onequarter teaspoon pepper, one cup water. Chop meat and brown slightly in butter melted in sauce pan. Add lettuce cut in slices, onions thinly sliced and water and simmer fortyj five minutes. i Add peas, salt and pepper and j cook fifteen minutes longer. Stir ; gently with a fork to prevent sticking, but take care not to crush peas. | Serve very hot. Wash Spinach Wash spinach thoroughly before ' cooking. One of the reasons spinach has come in for so much personal dislike in spite of its official good standing is that it often is gritty and unpleasant to eat. Dried Beef Shortcake Prepare hot baking powder biscuits three inches in diameter, split, butter, and fill with freshly creamed dried beef. Serve with small green onions sliced and dressed with vinegar, pepper and salt.

as good or as big a picture as “A Connecticut Yankee in the Court of King Arthur,’’ but the dance scene and the cat scene with the chocolate nut sundae are two of the funniest stunts Rogers has brought to the talking screen. In the tango scene. Rogers wears | a leopard skin. No Tarzan in any ■ movie has a better yell than has | Rogers. I wouldn't say that Will does the yelling himself, but I am sure that no double does the dance. If you don't feel like burning your clothes after seeing Rogers do this dance in ' Handy Andy,” I give up. tt tt tt ON the stage I am a great admirer of most things that Peggy Wood does, but I have the feeling that she is miscast as the wife of Will in this movie. Miss Wood's singing voice is right on the stage or screen, but she never allows herself, except in one scene, to become human in her consideration of Andy, her husband (Will). She does no harm to the picture, but she could have been more i human. The love interest which is present in all Roger movies is nicely developed by Mary Carlisle and Robert Taylor. Roger Imhof who made himself an institution on the variety stage for more than seventeen years <s cast as ‘'Doc” Burmeister. It is just a little role but he makes it shine in human qualities.

Wayne, where liquor valued at SI,OOO, minus excise stamps, has been impounded. The whiskey, forty-seven cases, was trucked into Ft. Wayne by the Certificate Corporation of America. Chicago, which is not licensed to do business in Indiana. The whisky should have borne $282 worth of state excise stamps. Alcohol, beer, clothing and money formed the bulk of the loot stolen last night and early today by thieves in Indianapolis.
