INDIANA'S CORN CROPS SAVED BY BREAK IN HEAT Unless Drought Ends AAA Faces Serious Problem, Says Wallace. Th* break in high temperatures has saved Indiana's corn crop from almost total destruction. J. H Armmgton. local meteorologist said today. The blistering six-day heat wave of temperatures ovr 100 degrees burned the tassels and top leaves of the corTi. according to Mr Armington and rain was necessary. At the same time, word was recened from Washington that Agriculture .Secretary Henry A. Wallace has said that, should the corn-belt which includes Indiana. pass through another three weeks of combined drought and high temperatures. the agricultural adjustment administration would be faced with a staggering problem The entire policy of the AAA might have to be reversed from curtailment to increased production because of the burnt-out crops. Mr. Wallace feels. Many farmers are getting their only cash of the year from AAA contracts. Mr. Wallace pointed out. The drought has performed a service in wiping out surplus, but. if it continues to ravage the corn-belt all its benefits will be wiped out, the secretary believes. July 27—Although corn and hog contract payments from the agricultural administration are expected to reach nearly $1 000.000 in Indiana during July and August, they amounted to only *44 050 60 for June, a tabulation showed today. All AAA payments in Indiana during the month of June totaled $Ol 076 85. Os this sum. wheat accounted for $4.600 42; tobacco, sot $42.425 63. and corn-hogs, for $44,050 60. Total AAA payment in Indian as of June 30 were $1,441,939.33, and were divided as follows: Wheat. $1,351.77295; tobacco $46 - 115 78. and corn-hogs. $44.050 60.
