ARBITRATION IS ACCEPTED; DOCK WALKOUT ENDS Strikers by Overwhelming Vote Favor Settlement by U. S. /?y Cnited Prnu> SAN FRANCISCO, July 27.—Pacific coast seaport* were sweeping from their waterfronts today last vestiges of the maritime strike following the overwhelming vote of Longshoremen in favor of federal arbitration. While employers, union leaders and the President s national Longshoremen's board conferred on arrangements for returning approxj imately 20.000 marine strikers to ! work, preparations went forward on all sides for resumption of normal business. The McCormick Steamship Company announced its entire fleet of thirty-two vessels wdll resume regular schedules. Other lines adver- | tised sailings which had been cancelled since early in May. Troops Withdrawn Governor Frank F. Merriam ordered withdrawn from the San Francisco embarcadero the 1,000 national guardsmen who remained on duty. The Longshoremen, members of the International Longshoremen's Association, voted 6.338 to 1.471 to accept federal arbitration of all differences with their employers. The vote empowered the President’s board to evolve a settlement of all issues of the longshoremen's strike, including the problem of control of the hiring halls. Hiring Hall to Open In Portland, Governor Julius L. ! Meier announced opening today of Ia temporary state hiring hall where
longshoremen ready to return to work immediately can register. Seamen and eight other marine unions struck in sympathy with the longshoremen. They have been promised arbitration also. The President s board is arranging for a vote among the seamen to select their representatives for collective bargaining. The balloting wdll take several months. Dr. Louis Bloch, secretary of the board, said election of seamen's representatives probably will start Friday.
