HOUSE PROBE BEGINS INTO VETERAN CASES Former Bank Cashier Called as First Witness. ftf Prrtt MARION. Ind July 23 Robert P. Kiiey. prominent state Democratic leader and former cashier of the Grant Trust and Savings bank, was the first witness called today as a special congrestsonal committee opened Investigation of alleged maladministration of incompetent veterans affairs. Mr. Kiiey was questioned regarding his knowledge of banking and the operations of the Marion Title and Loan Company, a securities affiliate of the bank. It has been charged that securities sold to veterans estates by the Title and Loan Company were partially responsible for loss of $200,000 to the government wards. Questioning of the witness was onducted bv Samuel C Cleland. Ft Wayne attorney, special investigator. YOUNGSTERS ARE SflOT Two Wounded by Bullets Intended for Chicken Thief. Shooting at a rhicken thief. Theodore Hewes, 2051 Hillside avenue, Saturday shot and injured two Negro children walking near his home. The thief escaped. The wounded are Daisy May Rouse. 9, of 2056 Hovey street, and Oilie Grooms. 12, of 1526 East Nineteenth street. Hewes was charged with assault and battery with intent to kill.
