H.P. WHITNEY'S ESTATE DROPS TO 862,808,829 Late Sportsman’s Holdings Shrunk 30 Per Cent Since 1930. sis, t pifttl Prr., * NEW YORK, July 20. At the time of hi.s cmath in 1930 Harry Pavn** Whitney, noted sportsman ;>r.d financier, controlled holdings valued at $72 740.838, according to a transfer tax appraisal on file today. Since then, however, the estate has suffered an estimated shrinkage <-f 30 per cent due to the reduced value of securities worth $64000,000 four years ago. Some finacial experts held the shrinkage had been even higher and that at one time the total estate probably had a value in excess of $200,000,000. State Levies Tax Net value of the estate was listed in the appraisal as $62,808 829. The sta’e will levy a tax of 59.513.013. The Whitney investments covered a wide field. There were 124 stock I’ems appraised at 847.362.302; 196 items of municipal bonds and seven of miscellaneous bonds valued together at $16,354,719. Among the Whitney real estate was the mansion andi plot at 871 Fifth avenue, worth $1,650,000. and property at Old Westbury, L. 1., appraised at $2,186,804. Horses Worth $169,000 • There was $747,616 cash in the estate. Personal effects at the Fifth avenue home alone were set at $749.793. including rare objects of art. the most costly of which was a portrait of "Sir William Villiers” by Van Dyck, valuation $60,000. The famous Whitney horses were listed at $169,000. Principal beneficiaries of the estate are the widow, Mrs. Gertrude Vandcrbrit Whitney of New York, and three children. Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, Flora Whitney Miller and Barbara Whitney Henry, all of Westbury. 2.000 STRIKERS BACK IN AKRON TIRE PLANT Workers Win Increase After FourWeek Walkout. /fjr { *;•</ frm AKRON. 0., July 20.—Two thousand employes of the General Tire and Rubber Company were back at work today after a four-week strike. Factory workers accepted terms of a company program at a mass meeting Wednesday night. The plan was given to a labor committee by W. O'Neil, company president, with figures showing that average yearly wages at the plant would be the highest in the rubber industry. O Neil sent a message to the employes saying he was ‘‘glad that this walkout has been ended amicably—and in accordance with the principles of the national recovery act.” CUPID GAINS FAVOR, LEAGUE DISCLOSES Marriages Increased Throughout World in 1933. /y f nit* 4 /*rcii GENEVA, July 20.—Marriage is becoming more popular throughout the world, the statistical year book of the League of Nations showed today. An almost universal increase of marriages in 1933 was reported, especially in Germany. France, Italy, Great Britain. Argentina and Chile. League experts said the increase follows a continuous decline in recent years. The proportion of old people is increasing considerably and the proportion of youth decreasing.
