New Heroes Ruled First Half of 1934 Sport Year Few National or State Champions Retained Their Titles: Dunn, Metcalfe, Fuqua Are Exceptions.
BY WAYNE FOX THE half-way mark of the 1984 sports season has been passed. The first half must have produced more “dark horses” and new champions than any corresponding period for a long time, both in the state and abroad. * Name, offhand, individual champions who have retained thentitles.
Miss Elizabeth Dunn did it in the women's state golf tournament yesterday. Outside of that, the only notable example in Indiana is Ivan Fuqua. Brazil's national A. A. U. 400-meter running champion. Ralph Metcalfe retained two national dash titles. In team competition. Notre Dame successfully retained its state golf title and Purdue its Big Ten basketball title. Norman Cottom. Boilermaker forward, became the new individual scoring champ of the conference. Cavalcade in Supreme Test at Arlington Victory Today Would Make Sloane Horse 1934 Turf Champion. BY GEORGE KIRKSEY United Pres* Staff Correspondent CHICAGO, July 14.—The turfs 3-year-old championship, prize money of $31,325 and a piece of antique silver from Old England beckoned Cavalcade in the sixth running of the Arlington classic today at Arlington Park race track. A crowd of 30.000 descended on picturesque Arlington Park expecting to see Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sloane’s great thoroughbred add the classic to his victories in the Kentucky, American and Detroit Derbies and prince into the winner’s circle the year's 3-year-old champion. So sure w’ere the mutuel players that Cavalcade, ridden by Uncle Mack Garner, 34-year-old Centerville Ga.) jockey, would triumph, they made the Brookmeade entry, which also included Good Goods, an odds-on favorite. A winning $2 bet on Cavalcade: may bring 90 cents or less.
Eleven Entered Eleven were named to run in the mile and a quarter race. If all start the race will gross 541.850. In other years the classic has been 1 a jinx to favorites, only one of them. ! Gallant Fox, getting home first, and | his victory didn’t justify the 3 to 10 I odds on him. Earl Sande just barej ly landed Gallant Fox a neck ahead !of Gallant Knight at the finish of j the 1930 race. | Among the favorites who have been humbled in the classic are Rose of Sharon in 1929, Twenty Grand in 1930, Top Flight in 1931 and Head Play last year. But “Smiling Bob” Smith, 66-year-old trainer of Cavalcade, is confident his charge will spreadeagle the field in the stretch and win like a true champion. “Cavalcade is a better colt than any that ever ran in the classic.” said Smith, “and he'll prove his right to the 3-year-old title beyond any doubt today.” Cavalcade, assigned top weight of 126 pounds, drew’ post position No. 7. Garner is expected to rate him well back in the early running and make his move in the stretch, as he did in the Kentucky and American derbies. Peace Chance Out With Joseph E. Widener's Peace Chance, Belmont Stakes winner, out of the race because of an injured knee, Cavalcade’s chief opposition is expected to come from Alfred G. Vanderbilt's Discoverey, a 5-1 shot; Warren Wright’s Hadagal. an 8-1 shot, and Norman W. Church's Riskulus, a 15-1 shot.. Discoverey, nicknamed “Cavalcade’s Shadow,” because of the fact that he has chased Cavalcade across the finish line five times this season. is considered in better form than in any of his other meetings with the Brookmeade beauty. He recently w r on the Brooklyn Handicap, beating Dark Secret in impressive fashion. Eastern money is backing him. Track touts generally figure the finish as follows: Cavalcade, Discovery and Riskulus. The other entries include Hadagal, Boy Valet, Howard, Thomasville, New Deal. Grawler, Bien Fait and Cavalcade's stablemate. Good Goods. All seem badly outcla.ssed except Hadagal, which gets his first test over a route of ground.

With the addition to its battery staff of J. Twigg and Tod Wilbur, the E. C. Atkins baseball team feels prepared to buck the strong Sanitary nine at Perry stadium this afternoon.
