Bulldog Drummond Is New Mystery Films Hero BV WALTER I>. HICKMAN
SHERLOCK HOLMES has been mv favorite detective for years, but he has been dethroned by Bulldog Drummond, an amateur detective who solves crimes and prevents others before Scotland Yard can get busy. I probably should say that Drummond is mv favorite screen detective just now because he has been brought to life again by Ronald Colman in “Bull-
dog Drummond Strikes Ba c k.” Here is a mystery yarn that really has intelligence in its situations. Drummond not only gets his “man,” but also gets himself a wife, the heroine of the story. To tell too much of a mystery story is not fair to those who go to the theater for thrills and suspense. It
Mr. Colman
is enough to know that Drummond comes mighty close to being outwitted by the clever and oily villian, Warner Oland. When he gets ready to strike back at his enemy, Drummond strikes with a deadly stroke. This picture has excellent comedy relief because that work has been given to Charles Buttcrworth and Una Merkel as the newlyweds. Butterworth rapidly is becoming one of the drollest and most individual comedians on the talking screen. He does a fine job in this movie. He will give you many laughs and Miss Merkel helps out in this good fun. If you enjoy beautiful interiors of

I homes, t hen study cares ully the set- ! tings of the drawing and dining looms in the house of mystery oci cupied by Mr. Oland and his con- ! federates. Also take time to watch the living room of Drummond's apartment. It is in excellent good taste -and proof that extravagance may not be gaudy to get dazzling effects. “Bulldog Drummond Strikes | Back” is both family and adult eni tertainment. I had a grand time seeing it. Now at Loew’s Palace. nan OTHER theaters today offer: Joe E. Brown in “Circus Clown,” at the Lyric; Cary Grant in “Kiss and Make Up,” at the Apollo, and Rich- ! ard Barthelmess in “Midnight I Alibi.” at the Circle.

ROOSEVELT TO CO FISHING AT COCOS ISLAND President Pauses on Trip to Hawaii; Denies Johnson to Quit. by United Press ABOARD CRUISER NEW ORLEANS, July 13.—President Frank- | lin D. Roosevelt in the cruiser Houston veered southward from the course to Hawaii today to enjoy a day's fishing in tiny Cocas island, legendary cache of pirate gold. Today the President was busy with routine administration affairs, an interruption enforced by White ! House mail placed aboard the Houston at Panama. The Houston was due at Cocos at 5 p. m. today. The President plans to remain over Saturday. With the New Orleans as escort, the Houston left Panama late yesterday, after the President had given assurance that General Hugh Johnson would remain director of NR A. The President said specifically that General Johnson was not going to resign. Mr. Roosevelt has high hopes of good fishing at Cocos island, in the specially fitted motor launch that was prepared for fishing during his leisurely vacation trip. 200 C. M. T. C.
