Governor Pinchot today threatened an investigation of the University of Pittsburgh a' a result of the dismissal of Dr. Ralph E. Turner, associate professor at the institution and a member of the Pennsylvania Security League. The Governor made public a letter he wrote to John G. Bowman, university chancellor, who gave Dr. Turner a year's salary’ and asked him to “go somewhere else where you will be happier than you are here." “If the facts are as I understand them,” the Governor wrote. “I shall have no choice but to lay them before the next regular session of the general assembly and recommend a thorough investigation of Dr. Turners case and of the history of academic freedom at the University of Pittsburgh, for the purpose of determinating whether the university should continue to receive public funds." Praising Dr. Turner's ability as a professor, the Governor charged that “liberal causes heretofore have been suppressed and independent thinkers discouraged so frequently at the university as to make it appear that this is the settled policy of the university under your administration.” The letter pointed out to Dr. Bowman that, since the taxpayers contribute to the university, academic freedom is necessary. “If the University of Pittsburgh is to teach only facts and ideas that are acceptable to the overrich.” the Governor said, "then it might well be supported by the over-rich, but not by public funds.”

NEW EXAMINER NAMED Torre Haute Man Returns to Old Post With State. Cyril Connelly, Terre Haute, has been commissioned as an examiner by the state board of accounts. Mr Connelly was one of the first examiners appointed by the state in 1910. He served until 1917 and for seventeen years has been controller of the Indiana State Teachers' college.
