OTHMAN linitrd Prm Staß tnrrr.pnndmt WASHINGTON, July 12.—James Aloysious Farley, the postmastergeneral and chairman of the Democratic national committee, is the same genial gentleman he's always been, despite the buffeting the NewDeal has brought him. As lord high dispenser of patronage he has kept political fences patched by finding jobs for thousands of Democrats and by keeping soothed the other thousands lor whom jobs were not forthcoming. As chief mail man he has been involved in controversies about art the kind of glue that should go on the back of postage stamps, and—more seriously—the flying of the air mail. Air Mail Fiasco Blame The army's air mail fiasco wasn't exactly Farley's fault, but he was blamed for it. anyway. He also has been blamed because the feet of Whistler's “mother” were amputated on the “Mother’s day” stamp and because the stickum used on stamps is imported from Java, duty free. These and ocher problems may or may not worn.' Farley. He gives no indication. His stock answer to all queries concerning any of them is: “Time takes care of everything.” President Roosevelt's edict that politics must be divorced from government still hasn't affected the smiling, bald-pated P. M. G. All other members of the Democratic committee who also held government posts have resigned from one or the other. Farley has been asked repeatedly whether he’s going to quit the government or the committee chairmanship, but he always has replied: “That? Why, that's in the President's lap.” The postmaster-general seems to have had more fun so far during his term than any other New Dealer. He had a vacation in Europe. He went to the Kentucky Derby, to the Carnera-Baer fight and to numerous other sporting events. He is a frequent visitor to the nearby Maryland race tracks and to the ball games. He never misses a party at the White House.

Grateful to Hoover Men Farley was happy to move out of the old postofficc department building which had housed his predecessors since the gay nineties. He said it contained too many cockroaches. He is grateful to the Hoover Republicans for the fine new headquarters they started to build across the street from the old. Farley moved in a few days ago and just has completed decorating his walnut paneled private office with photographs of himself and the President, framed documents showing that he is an honorary member of Rotary and Lions Clubs, and an Irish shillalah, which hangs from a nail by a green ribbon. It is estimated that Farley has found positions for nearly 25,000 persons. Others still haunt his headquarters. Farley receives them all courteously. Most of them he takes care of in one way or another. Farley himself is always having jobs forced upon him. He turned one down recently—that of boxing commissioner for the District of Columbia.

STATE RELIEF ROLLS TUMBLE Decrease of 990 Shown in County: Costs Also Take Drop. Unemployment relief costs and the number of persons on relief rolls in the five most heavily populated areas of this state showed a substantial reduction for last month as compared with May, the Governor's unemployment relief commission announced today in a report to the federal emergency relief administration. In Marion county, June relief cases totaled 17.002, a drop of 990 under May's 17.992. The reduction

! in expense was $53,355.38. bringing the cost down to $356,812.82. The five areas included in the report were Allen county, which includes Ft. Wayne; Lake county, which includes such industrial cities as Gary and Hammond; Marion county, St. Joseph county, which includes South Bend, and Vanderburg county, which includes Evansville. June showed 39.486 relief cases in the five areas, a reduction of 3.191 from May’s figure of 42.667. The cost of aid in June was $940.279 63, as contrasted with $1,046,026 for May. Negro Murder Suspect Arrested Claudius Blakemore. 31, Negro. 1501’- East Twenty-fifth street, was arrested and charged with the murder of Lawrence Shaw, 44. Negro, late yesterday by police. Shaw, a bystander, was slain in a dispute over change for a quarter Tuesday.
