In "Technics and Civilization,” by Mumford. a study of the effects of the machine upon civilization is presented with a plan for a fresh social, political and ideological adjustment of the modern world. Chairman of the new securities and exchange commission, which will regulate stock exchange operations, is Joseph P. Kennedy, above. New York capitalist, named by President Roosevelt to head the five-man board. Kennedy is a close friend of the President. one of his strong supporters in the 1932 campaign. SEVENTEEN ARRESTED ON GAMBLING CHARGES Alleged Poker Players Nabbed in Billard Parlor. Seventeen men were awaiting trial on gambling charges today following a raid on the Claypool billiard room yesterday afternoon when two poker games were found going full blast. The raiders under Sergeant Edward Kruse took more than $lO in cash which was lying on the table, they reported. Harry James, 60, and Ftov Hines. 42. were jharged with operating a gaming house. Others were booked for visiting it. Police stated that they had received numerous complaints that young men had been losing money regularly in the establishment.
