BRUTAL KILLER OF FARM GIRL DIES IN NOOSE Colorado Slayer, in Jail Four Years, Walks Unshaken to Scaffold. *•' Vm*U4 Prr., KANSAS CITY. Mo.. June 29 Paul Kauffrran, who knotted a silk •locking about the neck of the last of a long series of women in his life snd garroted her. died today at the end of a hemp rope. After a delay of nearly four years, the state exacted the supreme penalty for the Colorado ex-convicts murder of Avis Woolen', 18-year-old farm girt Kauffman went to his death quietly. He made a brief statement protesting innocence, conflicting *'ith his oft-repeated admission that he killed the girl. The trap was sprung at 6:03 a.m. Fifteen minutes later. Kauffman, of athletic build despite the years in jail, was pronounced dead. The body will be sent to his mother, Mrs. Lillie Kauffman of Columbia. Pa. Only his spiritual advisor, the Rev. David Bulkle.v, offered Kauffman consolation during the death watch. Repeatedly as Ms last days dwindled in number. Kauffman boasted: “I'll go standing up.” He did. Clothing was brought to his sultry death cell immediately before the march to the gallows began. He dressed quietly and apparently unshaken. heard the death warrant read by Sheriff Thomas B. Bash, brushed aside proffered aid and walked steadily around the corridor to the scaffold. There he scrutinized carefully the three black squares on the trip, chose the one in the center. spoke briefly and the trap clanged. both of Indianapolis, for receivership of the Madison Insurance Company of Madison has been decided in favor of the former by the Indiana supreme court. Mr. Batchelder was appointed in superior court two here by Clyde Karrer as special judge. Mr. Givan was appointed in Putnam circuit
court, but the company does not maintain an office in Putnam county. The supreme court restrained the Putnam circuit court from further action in the case and ordered Mr. Givan to turn over any company assets he may have in his possession.
