Romance in Late Years Ends Badly Case of Agnes Tufverson Shows Price Women Pay for Careers. YORK. June 28.—Agnes Tufverson had had no love affair before her meeting with the sinister Captain Podcrjay. Her sister's statement tells us that “she had no time for such things." It is just possible that a woman who had enjoyed the friendship of
many men might have been swept off her feet by the glib admirer, who demanded that she hand over her life savings to his care. It is passible. but mast unlikely. A 43-year-old woman who has had her share ot the frivolous life is a wise and worldly judge of men. A 43-year-old woman who has sacrificed

gavety and parties and the society of men has paid a dangerous price for her success in her career. She has left herself more vulnerable and credulo’i than the lightest headed little flapper after her first prom. There are some critics of the modern woman who believe that none of u can live happy lives without a husband and the normal allotment of children That is the extrem; t view. But it seems obvious that few women can rule love completely out of their lives without an emotional strain that may some day prove too much for them, as it apparently proved too much for Agnes Tufverson. That every man has a deep need for human companionship has long been recognized: that is why solitary confinement is regarded as the rruelest form of punishment in our prison . But that men and women need ociety of the opposite sex quite as deeply has not so often been pointed out. Most Successful Fall The ovcrambitious bachelor who has driven all thought of women from his life until he is a millionaire is the most gullible of bridegrooms when he finally selects a wife. The woman who has barred men from her field of interest for the sake of her career is the woman who may easily be victimized when she has finally attained success. For there comes a moment when the tension of trying to succeed is when even the most industrious woman lets herself relax and wonder whether her life is fully satisfactory. And when once she has realized its emotional failure she is very likely to fall into a state of panic in her eagerness to set things right. Blind to Warning Signals A won in may be astute and shrewd in her profession and still remain as credulous as a child in her judgment of a man's sincerity when he makes love to her. If her own belated longing for affection urges her to believe him. you may be sure that she will blind herself to any warning signs that the man is an advcntuier. What happened to Agnes Tufverson we may never know. But this we can, say with certain-ty—-lie fell into the hands of Podcrjay in an effort to compensate for the years in which she had no normal companionship with decent men.
