ITALY STUDIES PART PAYMENT ON WAR DEBT Token Offering May Be Made, With Remainder to Be Paid in Goods. By United Press WASHINGTON, June 14.—A1l eyes were on Italy today as the deadline approached for debtor nations either to pay their June 15 installments or default outright. There was a possibility that Italy might offer part payment and ask for an immediate conference on payment of the balance. So far Finland, with a semi-an-nual payment of approximately $50,000, is the only one of thirteen debtor nations which has said it will pay as usual. Most large debtors, headed by Great Britain, whose installment totals approximately $85,000,000, and France with $59,000,00, have announced formally they would default. The Italian ambassador, Augusto Rosso, was expected to visit the state department today and inform Secreary of State Cordell Hull what Italy proposes to do about the $14,000,000 installment due. According to advices from Rome, Italian authorities are of two minds. One group would pay at least a “token” in cash and link this with a formal request for early consultation between the two governments to see what might be done about the remainder —such as possible payments in goods and services, as was suggested in Mr. Hull’s note yesterday to Great Britain.
