$400,000 FIRE SWEEPS RIVER FRONTiI DEAD Three Others Hurt in Louisville; Shipping and Docks Are Destroyed. | By United Press ! LOUISVILLE, Ky., June B.—One I man was dead and three others were i injured in a $400,000 waterfront fire here today. Three boats, four barges and | thousands of dollars worth of river i docks and other equipment were | destroyed by the flames which j swept- five city blocks of river prop- ; erty. Refuse oil on the water ■ burned, sending flames fifty to sixty I feet in the air. A carelessly tossed cigaret or j match was believed responsible. Henry Jones, 46, Paducah, was | burned fatally while attempting to escape from the crew quarters of the American barge line steamer Duncan Bruce. Three members of the steamer’s crew were injured. The Duncan Bruce, 750-ton towboat, operating between Pittsburgh j and New Orleans, was damaged to j the extent of $150,000. The W. L. Berry, American barge line 500-ton towboat, was totally destroyed and sank. Loss was $50,000. The J. Robert Nugent, Nugent Sand Company forty-five-ton tugboat, was totally destroyed and sank, damage $30,000. Burning of two fuel barges, two derrick boats and two hopper boats caused $50,000 loss. Twenty-five members of the crew of the Monongahela were saved after the boat was* towed to safety and tied up by U. S. coast guardsmen. The fire was discovered about 1:30 !a. m. and was not under control : until * a. m. Property worth ten ' million dollars was endangered. DELTA GAMMA CLUB WINS AYRES CONTEST Silver Chest Awarded Victor in Table-Setting Event. The Delta Gamma Alumnae Club will receive first prize, a seventy-eight-piece chest of Rogers silver, as winner in the L. S. Ayres Company table-setting contest. The award was made by Mrs. J. H. Laird, Columbia Club; Miss Anna Hasselman, John Herron Art museum: Miss G. F. McHugh. Indianapolis Athletic Club, and O. E. Richey of the art institute, judges. Second prize in the contest will be awarded by public voting. Votes for this selection may be cast until 4 today. The second prize is a thirty-four-piece chest of Rogers j silver. JOHN REED CLUB TO j HEAR KOKOMO SPEAKER Culture to be Topic of Talk Tonight; Open to Public. Members of the John Reed Club will hear Warren C. Huddlestone, ; Kokomo, at 8 tonight in a speech on j culture under various forms of human organization in the past, and culture as it today finds expression in movies, sports, dances, music and writing. The meeting will be in the club room at 143 East Ohio street, Room 316, and will be open to the public. FACES MAYHEM COUNT City Man Alleged to Have Attacked Woman in Restaurant. Richard Jackson, 34, of 1247 Hiatt street, was arrested yesterday charged with mayhem, assault and battery and vagrancy after he was alleged to have attacked Miss Helena Grogg, 30, of 48 North Chester street, in a restaurant in the 300 block on East South street. Miss Grogg suffered a fractured nose, cut left eye and lacerations of the right ear and body. No explanation was given for the attack. Relief Corp to Dine Past presidents of Major Robert Anderson Women’s Relief Corps, No. 44, will hold a luncheon at Ft.’ Friendly Monday. Mrs. Lillian Stephens is in charge of the affair.
