BEER DRINKING BRINGS GRIEF TO FISHERMAN Negro Draws Jail Term on Drunken Driving Charge. Because he enjoyed too well the combined luxury of fishing and drinking beer, John Huey, Negro, 1220 Cameron street, was fined $lO and costs and sentenced to thirty days on the penal farm by Judge Dewey Meyers in traffic court. Huey pleaded guilty to operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of liquor. Witnesses 'said that his automobile swerved back and forth the width of East New York street, striking two other cars. The Theatrical World Sorrell and Son One of H.B: Warner’s Best BY WALTER D. HICKMAN

THE legitimate touch in direction as well as acting is satisfactorily apparent in the talking version of “Sorrell and Son.” You probably will say off hand that you have seen H. B. Warner as. Captain Stephen Sorrell and you are right. Years ago before the talking

down. The son, Kit, becomes a great surgeon and finds happiness in a healthy and normal marriage with a splendid girl. Molly. The picture ends in an argumentative mood as well as a dramatic one. Sorrell had kept secret from his son that old age and years of privation had resulted in an incurable disease. Suffering tremendous pain, Sorrell puts himself into the hands of his son and commands him to give him a sleeping potion from which he will never awaken. The picture ends with Kit and Molly confident that Stephen Sorrell will never experience pain again. Warner gives a dignified performance of a father who permits father love to rue his entire life. In the hands of a less competent actor, this role could have been unbearably sappy. Not so in the hands of Mr. Warner. Peter Penrose is slightly strained at times as Kit, when he was a child but this young actor, speaking plainly and pleasantly, fails to give Kit the characteristics of an average boy. Mr. Williams as the adult Kit is just as convincing as Mr. Warner. He handles his love scenes naturally with Winifred Shotter as Molly. The role of Dora, wife of Captain Sorrell, is a most unsympathetic one. She is a social rotter and deserves the rebuke that her son gives her. Margot Grahame has this difficult role and gives a satisfactory performance. From a scenic standpoint, this movie has been beautifully mounted. The direction is that of an expert CLUB LEADER IS BETTER Parents and Teachers’ Historian Seriously 111 at Hospital. screen was perfected, Mr. Warner created the original role of Sorrell Sr., in a silent version. “Sorrell and Son” is a splendid example of the sacrifice of a father for his son. It is not necesary to go into detail concerning this story but sufficient to point out that the son does not let his father
