HOTEL MEN OF CITY OPEN WAR ON LIQUOR TAX Bootleg Whisky Now Used, Group Charges, Due to ‘Exorbitant Levy.’ The Indiana Hotel Men’s Association yesterday launched a vigorous protest against what they termed “exorbitant state excise taxes” in a session at the Severin. Representatives of retail and wholesale liquor distributors sat in the meeting and voiced their protest against state laws which prohibited the sale of liquor to hotels and clubs. The association charged that bars, taprooms and restaurants were buying bootleg liquor and using it for public sale and consumption in highball;? and cocktails. The distri-

butors said that their business had been forced down by illicit sales. The association suggested two remedies which will be placed before Governor Paul V. McNutt and Paul Fry, excise director. They are abolition of the excise tax, or reduction of the tax. They also will ask that the excise department rule that liquor may be sold by the drink in hotels, clubs and qualified restaurants.
LAFAYETTE’S PORTRAIT IS LOANED TO FRANCE Famed Painting Sent to Paris; Courtesy Repaid. By Vn ited Press NEW YORK, June B.—As a return courtesy for the loan of Whistler’s painting of his mother, America will send the famous Morse portrait of the Marquis de Lafayette to Paris for the Paris Lafayette Centenary exhibition. The protrait was turned over to a French, government representative today by Mayor Fiorella La Guardia. It will be exhibited at the Louvre this summer. Pennsylvania produces more anthracite coal than any other state.
