PLANE WINS DEATH RACE Airliner Rushes Girl, 3, to Hospital for Brain Operation. By United Press BALTIMORE, Md., June 7.—An Eastern Air Line plane won a 700mile race with death today, bringing 3-year-old Martha Ann Greenwood to Johns Hopkins hospital from Greenville, S. C., for an emergency brain operation. The child has been unconscious since Saturday when she lapsed into a coma after an attack of the measles. An abscess of the brain developed. Dctors communicated with Dr. Walter E. Dandy, Johns Hopkins’ brain surgeon, who ordered her immediate removal to Baltimore. The race started at 11:05 o’clock last night from the Greenville airport. Despite adverse weather which grounded southbound planes, Pilot Dick Merrill sped Martha Ann northward at 135 miles an hour. At Washington, Champ Taliaferro, member of the Wilmington Dupont
Reid Tape Is Eliminated by Auto License Chief
Applications to Be Mailed Prospective Plate Purchasers. Elimination of red tape in the purchase of automobile license plates and drivers licenses has been perfected and is being put into operation by Frank Finney, chief of the state auto license division. The license bureau is preparing applications from title records on file and will mail these applications to auto owners to reach the prospective plates purchasers by Dec. 1. Then the auto owner need only write in his name, county, and township and present it at a license br..~ch or at the statehouse with the proper fee. Thus, the auto owner receiving his application by mail need not present his title to obtain plates, as the title already family, took over the control and made the final leg to Baltimore in seventeen minutes flat. Doctors £aid that Martha Ann’s condition was grave, but that she had withstood the trip well. An operation will be performed today.
has been examined by the department and ownership established. The proper rating also will be made, so there will be no question of the fee at a license branch. On presentation of the poll tax receipt and payment of the fee, the auto owner will receive with his plates a validated certificate of ownership, which is attached to the application. Two coupons are attached to the plates application and will be retained for the state files. The operator’s license will be printed on a card of convenient size and the form has been simplified so that issuance may be speeded up. Rearrangement of the various license department offices has been planned by Mr. Finney so persons calling at the department no longer need be sent from one room to others in the statehouse. Trackless Line Approved The works board yesterday, approved a petition of Indianapolis Railway Inc., to replace street cars with trackless trolleys on the Columbia avenue line.

MORE PATRONAGE IS ASKED BY VAN NUYS Midwest Neglected on Big Jobs, Farley Told. By Times Special WASHINGTON, June 7.—A new deal in the matter of federal patronage for Indiana has been demanded of the Roosevelt administration by Senator Frederick Van Nuys. The Hoosier Democratic senator was one of several who conferred with Postmaster-General James A. Farley, national Democratic chairman and administration patronage dispenser, regarding this matter. He told “Smiling Jim” that Indiana has been almost wholly neglected in major appointments, although they have had many minor ones. The better positions have been going to the east and south and the midwest is being neglected, the senator charged. Mr. Farley was inclined to grant the point, Senator Van Nuys said, although no specific jobs nor names were mentioned. They did not discuss the senatorial race in Indiana, he asserted.
