BEETLE ARMY READY TO WAR ON CROP PESTS California Ladybirds to Be Shipped to Midwest for ‘Police Duty.’ By United Pres* LOS ANGELES, June s.—Dr. Robert Bogue, dealer in pea-sized policemen for fruit and vegetable gardeners, prepared today to rush his insect policemen to midwestern and eastern farmers whose crops are curtailed by the drought. Dr. Bogue is the world's largest dealer in Hippbdamia Convergens, those tiny ladybird beetles with a ravenous appetite for plant lice. Dr. Bogue learned that the hiber- j nating ladybird beetle can be. shaken, half frozen but alive, from bushes in the California mountains j and can be shipped anywhere under i sufficient refrigeration. The discovery has built him a considerable business. Vegetable! gardens can be patrolled by the beetles at from 15 to 20 cents an , acre, he estimates. Bring ’Em Back Alive The Frank Bucks on his staff bring them back alive from the! Sierras. They operate between San j Bernardino to Lassen and Shasta on the north. On the high plateaus they find I ladybirds by the millions asleep on j the bushes. The searchers shake! the bushes, box the beetles in wet j moss, and ship them frozen to Dr. Bogue’s plant in Los Angeles. In the plant, patient workers sort j the beetles by hand—they run 100,000 to the peck—in order to •eliminate several undesirable species. Then they are kept in cold storage until ordered. Dr. Bogue recently filled an order for one million j beetles for a Virginia co-operative. | Served With A. E. F. The Hippodamia Convergens is! the only ladybird feeding on the 1 eggs of the vegetable Aphis, and j the only beetle which can not be propagated in confinement. It is about the size of a small pea and is a pink-orange color with small black spots. Dr. Bogue grows other beetles to combat fruit and flower lice. A former student in entomology j at Northwestern, Johns Hopkins j and London universities, the chief ! of the Sierra ladybird hunters was j a sanitation officer in the A. E. F.i and in his capacity as delousing expert, unanimously won the cheers of many a soldier. LOGANSPORT SHRINE TO GIVE MINSTREL HERE Dance to Follow Entertainment Saturday at Murat. The performance by the thirtytwo Logansport minstrels will bring the local Shrine season to a close. It will not be necessary to present the current membership card for admission to the event. War Mothers to Convene The War Mothers will have a state picnic at 10 Friday at the Brookside community house, with Victor Armstrong. American Legion j state commander, as principal speaker. YOUR GROCER WILL HELP YOU KEEP HEALTHY AND HAPPY Delicious Cereal Promotes Regular Habits - ■■ The right kinds of foods form the very basis of health. You need nourishment for strength and energy. And you need “bulk” to prevent common constipation. Otherwise, this ailment may cause headaches, loss of appetite and energy. You can correct it, usually, by eating a delicious cereal. Kellogg’s All-Bran adds generous “bulk” to your daily menu. Tests show this “bulk” is similar to that found in leafy vegetables. Inside the body, the fiber of AllBran absorbs moisture, and forms a soft mass. Gently, this clears out the intestinal wastes. All-Bran is also a good source of vitamin B and iron. Isn’t it safer—and pleasanter—to enjoy this food in place of taking patent medicines? Two tablespoonfuls of All-Bran daily will overcome most types of common constipation. Chronic cases, with each meal. If seriously ill, see your doctor. All-Bran makes no claim to be a “cure-all.” Serve All-Bran as a cereal with milk or cream, or cook into fluffy muffins and breads. Remember, Kellogg’s All-Bran is all bran with only necessary flavoring added. It contains much more needed “bulk” than part-bran products. Get the red-and-green package at your grocer’s. Made by Kellogg in Battle Creek.
