ABBOTT OUSTER I SEEN AS BLOW TO POLITICIANS Showdown Thought Near in Roosevelt’s Attempt to Purge Offices. By United l’rri WASHINGTON. May 23.—Resignation of Horatio Abbott of Michi- ( gan as collector of internal revenue appeared likely today to hasten a showdown on President Roosevelt's effort to purge federal offices of political party officials. Abbott is Michigan's Democratic ! committeeman. He resigned federal! office under complaints that includ- ! rd allegations he solicited political campaign contributions from Detroit industries. The cases of two Abbott aids, > John Tighe and George Woods. I have been taken under advisement by treasury secretary Henry Morgenthau Jr Abbott is alleged to hat'* authorized Tighe to seek campaign funds. The Michigan collector resigned 1 in the eighteenth week of the White Hr i e drive to reform the national committee, political lawyers who held party office and hung their shine les to lucrative Washington practice were the first to go. President Roosevelt has been obstructed throughout the clean-up campaign by the practical politician element of the party. Two collectors of internal revenue ; still combine that responsibility with that of national committeeman.! They are Joseph Wolfe of Minne- 1 sot a and H. H. Perry of North Dakota. Both are slated to abandon one job or the other. Practical politicians within the party, however, resent Mr. Ro.-evelt's insistence that federal officials outside of the capital be compelled ultimately to forego party office or government pay checks. They blame the brain trust for their troubles. CHICAGO - MIAMI AIR MAIL OPENING SOON Line to Carry No Passengers at First, Officials Say. The new Chicago-Miami air mail line, contract for which was awarded by the postoflice department recently to Eastern Air Lines, will he opened probably about June 1. The exact date still is tentative, according to officials of the company who paid a visit to Charles E. Cox Jr., municipal airport superintendent. Monday. The company probably will carry only mail at first, possibly placing passenger ships in service through here in a month or two. One night round-trip mail flight will be made at the start. May 23.—Pope Pius left the Vatican today for a motor trip to his summer villa at Castelgandolfo, recently restored. HUMOROUS DEBATE TO BE HELD BY STUDENTS Tech Literary Club Will Attend Year s Final Meeting. ' Beverly Zolezzi and George Messmer will be chairmen of the affirmative and negative teams in a humorous debate to be held at the last meeting of the Stijatford Literary Club of Technical high school tomorrow. Other members of the teams will be: Affimative, Joan Lay and Hix Heier; negative, Alice Heine and David Meacham. John St. Helens, club president, will serve as debate chairman. The judges will be Edwin Rose, Adaline Walker and Barbara Dyar. Miss Helen Thornton is club sponsor. CAFES SEEK RIGHT TO DISPENSE HARD LIQUOR Retail Association Counsel Prepares Appeal for McNutt. Permission to sell hard liquor in cases will be sought from the state administration by the Retail Beverage Dealers’ Association. Wilbur Royse, attorney, is preparing a petition to be presented to Governor Paul V. McNutt and Paul Fry, state excise director. One hundred fifty-five case and restaurant owners are members of the beverage dealer group.
