VINCENT ASTOR QUESTIONED BY MAIL PROBERS Denies Shipping Discussed With President on Yacht Normahal. £ v Cntt'd Prtt* WASHINGTON, May 17.—Vincent Astor denied today before the senate committee on ocean mail contracts that his yacht, Nourmahal. had used for conferences with President Roosevelt on business affairs of the huge International Mercantile Marine Corporation. Replying to charges made in a senate speech by Senator Arthur R. Robinson <Rep., Ind.i, that P A. S. Franklin. International Mercantile Marine president, had spnt radio communications to the Nourmahal while the President was on board during several vacation fishing trips, said: "I can assure you that no person on that yacht ever took up anything pertaining to business with the President. That was not the purpose of our trips. The purpose was to give the President a rest and get him as far away from business as possible. He said only one communication relating to I. M. M. affairs was received while Mr. Roosevelt was on board. That was a message from P.asil Harris, company vice-presi-dent. addressed to Kermit Roosevelt, cousin of the chief executive, on Feb. 7. 1033. The Harris radiogram, he explained. was in connection with negotiations to obtain a shipping agency at Norfolk. Va. Senator Hugo L. Black, <Dem. Ala.) chairman, askde I. M. M. officials if they had attempted to have President Roosevelt re-appoint Admiral Hutch T. Cone and T. V. O Connor to the shipping board. Mr. Franklin said he would have “unhesitantly and probably did” recommend Mr. O'Connor. "Did you see Owen D. Young and

WALKATHON OPENS AT BROAD RIPPLE No State Law Prohibits Contest, Says Wilson. Opening of a new’ walkathon contest at Broad Ripple park tonight may result in some legal tangles and an attempt by Sheriff Charles j (Buck) Sumner to close the contest. Reports that A1 Feenney, state : safety director, would halt the con-
test because of fire hazards, were denied today. Mr. Feeney said that Roy Byers, contest promoter, had asked him to make recommendations for changing the park skating rink into a dance hall. Prosecutor Herbert E Wilson said that since there apparently was no state law aiming specifically against a walkathon. that he could take action only after it had been declared a public nuisance by neighbors or other interested persons. The city safety board will take steps to intercede against the walkathon if any flagrant violations of
a city ordinance are noted. Charles Meyers, board president, said today. Wanted—Old Gold Jewelry Broken or any condition, natch** n chain*, ring;* hr hi re*, teeth.
