LEVIATHAN WILL BE PUT BACK IN OCEAN SERVICE Queen of American Mercharft Marine to Undergo Overhauling. By United press NEW YORK. May 10.—The great Leviathan, once the symbol of Germany's Atlantic prowess and later the queen of the American merchant marine, is going back into regular ocean service. The luxurious liner, flagship of the United States Lines and largest vessel in the world, has rested ignominiously at her Hoboken pier since early last year when she was withdrawn from duty—a victim of the depression. Her owners said she lost SBO,OOO a trip in her last seven crossings. P. A. Franklin, president of the International Mercantile Marine, which operates the United States Lines, revealed today that the Leviathan will be reconditioned at once and make her first trip June 9. Under an agreement with the United States Shipping Board, she will make a minimum of seven round trips a year with ports of call at Plymouth. Cherbourg and Southampton. Built in Germany The announcement awakened the pride of every American merchantman. It meant that tiio monarch of the sea was coming back, to challenge the Bremen, the Washington, the Conte Di Savio and the Majestic for the supremacy she once held. Although it is barely a score of years since the Leviathan first slid from ways in Germany as the first ship of the Uamburg-American lines, she has a colorful history without parallel in modern shipplng. She was christened Der Vaterland, the finest ship flying the German flag, when she was launched April 3, 1913. Seized During War She sought refuge in New York when Great Britain declared war on Germany. America seized her when the United States entered the war. She was renamed and immediately pressed into service carrying troops to battle her native country. She carried 110,000 soldiers, nearly one-twentieth of the entire American expeditionary force. Congress voted $10,000,000 to recondition her after the war and she returned to passenger service in 1923 as the most palatial liner on the Atlantic. Towed to Hoboken in April of last year, the Leviathan was left a deserted monarch. Her lifeboats were left uncovered. Soot and ashes of her last voyage clogged the furnaces. Oil dripped from the tanks. Her ballast pumps and billage were exposed to wind and rain and rust. Some seamen estimated it would require a million dollars to put her back in service.
