May s.—Thf first defeat of Carl Hubbell. the Giant's nrr southpaw, today strengthened the hopes of other National League coirenders to overtake the champions in the early season race. Hubbei! received his set-back yesterday, after winning three straight, when the Pirates won 4 to 3. The pounded out twelve hits.
The Chicago Cubs turned back the Bn ‘on Braves as Guy Bush repi ’ered his fifth consecutive victor The score was 3to 1. A home run bv Baxter Jordan preveik r \ a shutout. Dolph Camilli hit a home run for the Cubs. The St Louis Cardinals extended their winning streak to six games behind ‘he seven hit pitching of Bill Walker.
