May 4— When Serge Alexandre Stavisky, master swindler, was at the height of his career, he lifted a human rat out of his hole and made him a pal. When Staviskv died, a bullet in his brain, in the French Alps, the ‘ pal” was with him —as a police informer. Henry Voix, • the voice," was an office boy in one of Stavisky's shady establishments when the super-crook p.cked him up and made him a personal representative." He was Stavisky’s confidential man, his intimate in every transaction. That was Stavisky's theory—‘‘raise a little man up and he will be grateful to you.” The theory collapsed, and with It went Serge Alexandre Stavisky. Small, yellow-skinned, wi'h large ears, silt-eyes, and a small, mean mouth. Voix might well have done a turn in the movies as the rat.” Stavisky knew at the time that Voix already was a police informer. But Stavisky himself had been a stoolpigeon and he counted on Voix's loyalty. He believrd Voix would give him every advantage of association with the police, and never give the polioe the advantage of his association with Stavisky. Stavisky Flees to Alps Now it is known that Voix was constantly in the halls of the Palais de Justice, or in the antc-chamher of 23 Rue dcs Sattssaies. headquarters of the Surete Generale. It is known that he betrayed to the detectives every move made by his patron. When in December. 1933. Stavisky realized that the Bayonne pawn shop fraud was on the point of bursting into a major scandal—and. incidentally that one of his betrayers was a lover of his wife, Arlette — he rushed over to the Rup des Saussates. But Voix had been there before him. Voix had divined on which side he should be found when the deluge of scandal broke over France. When he left the Surete. Stavisky was no longer “handsome Serge.” He was a miserable, lost scoundrel, robbed of his confidence and pretense. He told his wife. Arlette. to get out of town with her children. He fled, himself, to the Alps. Voix Accused of Crime Strangely blind to the situation, Stavisky chose as his traveling companion in flight, the voice. Did the police know that Henri Voix, their informer, would not let Stavisky go far? Did they count on the grudgebitten office boy to accelerate his master's panic—and possibly suicide? Certain editors, among them Leon Daudct, publicly accused Voix of firing the shot that killed Stavisky in his Alpine chalet. The police insist, however, that it was suicide. Voix emerged from the Alpine house of death with the police, and

Paul E. Fisher New thrice potent master of Adoniram Lodge of Perfection, governing body of the Scottish Rite, is Paul E. Fisher, who succeeds Fae W. Patrick. New officers were elected at last night's meeting. Mr. Patrick was presented with a thrice potent master’s jewel by the lodge. Tine P. Dickinson, also a past thrice potent master, made the presentation. Rush R. Harris was elected trustee for a three-year term. Other new officers are Frank A. Symmes, deputy master; Walter T. White, senior warden, and Murray H. Morris, junior warden. Other officers were re-elected. the suicide was announced. The stool-pigeon has not been permitted to go back to the underworld. He is in prison, “at the disposition of the authorities. Arlette Simon Stavisky, the beautiful widow, has proclaimed her doubts about the suicide.
