SUCCESS SEEN FOR DEMOCRATS BY JUDGE KERN Party Popular With People, Mayoral Candidate Declares. Declaring the people “know by experience that the Democratic party is the best instrumentality tor good government in this community,” Judge John W. Kern, candidate for the Democratic nomination for mayor, predicted success for his party in speeches at four political rallies Wednesday night. He addressed a crowd of 800 persons at a Seventeenth ward meeting at 2416 West Washington street, and spoke at meetings of Washington township Democrats at the Riviera Club; of the Seventh ward Democratic Club at Missouri and Thirteenth streets, and at Agnes and West Michigan streets. “The Democratic party,’ he declared,” is the only political machinery by which we, as a practical thing, can assure to this community honest, efficient and courageous government.” He urged all Democrats to keep their minds on the fall election, reminding them again “that the main purpose of the primary is to select the very best candidates.” “We must choose candidates who "best can advance the Democratic principles and fight for the success of the party next fall.” Forty other candidates, or their spokesmen, addressed the meeting of the Seventeenth ward.
Tom Taggart Club will hold a Democratic rally at 8 tonight at Caroline and Rosevelt avenues. Music and entertainment will be provided. All candidates are invited. The primary fight between two Republican mayoralty candidates, George L. Denny and Walter Pritchard, grew more heated last night as Mr. Denny attacked the words of his opponent at a political meeting at 1203 Windsor street. “My principal opponent is quoted as having said last night.” Mr. Denny asserted, “that, 'we can not talk of tax reduction and, at the same time, promise every kind of improvement’. “I am not so sure about that. My own observations, as a citizen and a taxpayer, and more especially my experience as a city council member, lead me to say that the first step in the job of tax reduction is to cut cut political plunder.” A final rally is being arranged at Thirty-eighth street and College avenue Saturday night, at which Mr. Denny, Ralph Gregg, Taylor E. Grrninger. Harvey A. Grabill and others will speak. “It will take the skill and courage of a business man to cut the governmental costs of Indianapolis,” Louis R. Markun, candidate for the Republican mayoralty nomination, declared last night at School 9, Vermont and Fulton streets. “Give a business man the opportunity to make budget and you will have real tax relief,” he continued. Mr. Markun also spoke at meetings at 852 South ‘ MtTicuan street, Fountain Square, Naomi and Shelby streets, Sixteenth street and Columbia avenue, and Nineteenth and Yandes streets. Final preparations for participation of the women’s organization of the Spencer-for-Prosecutor club, which is conducting a campaign in behalf of Herbert M. Spencer, candidate for the Democratic nomination for prosecutor, will be completed tonight at club headquarters, 405 Castle Hall, at 8 p. m. Mr. Spencer is scheduled to speak; tonight at Democratic meetings at the Town Hall in Beech Grove. West Tenth street and Pershing avenue. Twenty-ninth and Clifton streets, and the Walker theater. The national administration, particularly Henry A. Wallace, secretary of agriculture, was attacked last night by Delbert O. Wilmeth.j candidate for the Republican nomination for congress. Twelfth district, at a meeting at 426 North Warman avenue. “Attempts to reform our system of government without the people being aware of it should be blocked at every step,” he asserted. Boynton J. Moore, candidate for the Republican mayoralty nomination. stressed necessity of tax reduction. and pointed out now it can be accomplished, last night at several campaign meetings. Mr. Moore reiterated his pledge to reduce expenses of the city government, if elected, and to do everything possible to relieve the unemployed. CHILD'S LIFE IS SAVED
Virginia Grisel GIRL'S THROAT FREES OF PIN Life Saved by Doctor, Child of 4 Returns to Her Doll Family. All the dolls whose mother is Virginia Grisel, 4, were busy today saying "ahhh,'’ the kind of an “ahhh” you say with a teaspoon poked down your throat, but they had brought it cn themselves. If the dolls hadn’t worn out their rompers and had to be pinned up, Virginia wouldn't have lain for two hours in danger of her life on the operating table at St. Vincent’s hospital. Amelia, the tomboy of Virginia’s doll family, tore her clothes on Monday. Virginia cluck-clucked in chagrin, as is the way of mothers over torn clothes, and set about pinning the disheveled Amelia’s dress on her. In doing so, Virginia swallowed one of the three-quarter inch safety pins which she was holding in her mouth. The pin lodged in her windpipe in such a position as to cause slow strangulation. The child completely lost the use of her vocal chords. She was taken to St. Vincent's hospital where Dr. J. William Wright operated to save her life. Today at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Grisel, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Jac'rson Bruce, 2238 College avenue, Virginia was putting her recalcitrant children through their “ahhh” paces, just to see if the children could take it. And delighted to welcome her back, the "kids” took it and liked it.

RAIN FORECAST CHEERS FARMS U. S. Expert Fears Showers Will Not Aid Crops Already Harmed. By United Preaa CHICAGO, May 3. —Scattered showers and prediction of more rain brought hope today to a dozen farm states threatened by one of the most protracted spring droughts of western history. Farmers who have seen winter grain crops ruined by drifting topsoil and cattle dying because of dust covered fodder prepared to begin delayed spring planting if the promise of rain is fulfilled. Government Forecaster C. A. Donnell said he feared any rain which might fall today would be too light to remedy the harm already done.
