SPEECH GROUPS HEAR TALKS ON LEISURE TIME Archery, Golf and Music Suggested by Seniors at Manual. “How to Spend Your Leisure Time" be the subject of a program given by pupils enrolled in senior speech classes of Miss Vivian Webster at Manual high school today. The event was attended by pupils of English V. VI and VII and by those engaged in speech department activities. Talks by three students, Gertrude Hartman, Lillian Reisner and Merl Kord were illustrated by examples from the subjects which were, respectively, archery, golf and music as forms of recreation. Harry Kirschner was chairman of the meeting, the first of a series to be sponsored by the speech department. Entertain Frosh Members of Odd Number Club honorary literary organzation at Manual, gave a program recently for members of the freshman class to familiarize them with the club's activities. William Goldstein and Geraldine Brisbin read original short stories and Samuel Gordon, club secretary, reviewed the fourteen years of the club’s history. Young Gordon, assisted by Beatrice Weiss and Charles Goebel, arranged the session. John H. Moffat of the English department is sponsor of the organization. Others officers of the group, besides Gordon, are William Goldstein, president; Harry Einstandig, vice-president, and Marie Kuntz, treasurer. Spanish Club to Meet The Technical high school Spanish Club will meet today during the ninth period, when Miss Adele Phipps, faculty member, will tell of her recent trip through Mexico. Alice Heine is program chairman for April and Miss Esther Aldridge is club sponsor. Church Program Set The Demagorians, Technical religious group, will give a program, “I Call That Life," Sunday night at the Beech Grove Methodist church. Those on the program will be Martha Parrish, Merriam Howenstein, David Fowler, Joan Baker, George Messmer and Jack Hyser. ‘‘Life That Fails," was the subject of a discussion given by the group at the Pleasant Run Boulevard Reform church for the Garfield Park Christian Endeavor Union and the Epworth League recently. Those who participated were Mary Evelyn Daniel, Jack Hyser, Fern Messmer, John Tearney, George Messmer and Glenna Jones. Ben Davis Honor Rolls . Mrs. Orpha Park Mrs. Orpha Park was the driver of the automobile which plunged into the water of the canal at the head of Eugene street Tuesday night, causing the death of Mrs. Margaret Stewart, Lebanon. Mrs. Park and two other women nearly were drowned in the accident, said to have been caused by the absence of a barrier at the dangerous point.
PHONE CO. SHOWS GAIN OF 1,661 SUBSCRIBERS Increase Reported for First Three Months of 1934. A net gain of 1.661 subscribers during the first three months of 1934, as opposed to a loss of 6,797 during the same period last year, was announced by the Indiana Bell Telephone Company yesterday. Last month alone, 1,111 subscribers were obtained, as against a loss of 2.446 in March, 1933. Officers of the company stated it to be their belief that the recent gains constitute a reliable index of re-emplovment and business improvement.
