CASTER CUSTOMS .I—/ CLhjCrLLTud, tflS XJJcCuZcL

In Jerusalem, where the celebration of Easter is participated in by Chrisian sects from all the world, most dramatic of all ceremonies is the “miracle of the holy fire.” In the Church of Holy Sepulcher, containing the tomb of Christ, patriarchs of eastern sects light the holy fire. From this flame, swift runners light torches and race away to their respective sects. Men and women fight to light their own candles from the torches, and to extinguish those of other sects. Many persons have been killed and injured in these struggles. THE END*

—Sunday Sermon— RESURRECTION PROOF HELPED BV VARIATIONS Variances in Reports Nullify Possibility of Collusion. Text: John 20:1-1(5. 000 BY WM. E. GILROY, D. D. Editor of The Conrrrgationaiist The story of the resurrection o! Jesur is told by different writers anc in different ways. Some have seer in these different narratives conflicting evidence, and they havt made the differences a basis ol doubt. Is it not much more reasonablt to say that it is these very differences that destroy all idea of collusion. all notion that the disciples were making up “cunningly devisee fables,” and were agreed about telling the same thing? What we have in these resurrection stories is the simple narratives as they came out of the experiences of the disciples and as they developed in the early church. The resurrection of Jesus would not be a miracle, if we could explain it. and if we knew all about it. Knew Christ Lived The one great clear fact that does stand out is that, at the very hour of the disciples’ deepest gloom, when with great reluctance they were turning back .to their homes and to their old lives, the disappointed followers of a sublime hope that they were reluctant to give up. there came to them the clear assurance that Jesus was not dead. With that conviction, there was the revival of their faith that quickened them into newness of living and sent them forth with anew power to establish the Christian church and to build upon the great foundation of Christ himself the power and influences of Christianity. Reality Apparent. Who that- reads these narratives, and that considers all that these experiences had to do with the founding of the Christian religion, can doubt the reality of the experience? It is not ours to explain, but we are brought face to face with these mystic, spiritual experiences in which the disciples had a clear vision of their risen Lord. The most beautiful of all the narratives is that concerning Mary Magdalene, coming early in the morning, while it was yet dark, to the sepulchre where Jesus was buried, and finding the stone rolled away. Mary had come, apparently, rather in love and in loyalty than with any clear faith that she would find things changed. When she found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre, instead of waiting, she came running to Simon Peter and to the “other disciples whom Jesus loved,” probably John himself, making known to them her amazing discovery’. Tomb Scene Recalled Peter and John immediately ran to the sepulchre, but even zealous Peter was outdistanced by the loving John, who arrived first. John looked in, but did not enter the tomb. Impulsive Peter went all the way, and discovered that the body of Jesus was gone. The disciples went to their homes. We wonder with what thought in their hearts. But Mary, still mystified, still with her love and loyalty, rather than with any clear hope, stood outside the sepulchre weeping. It was then that she had the vision of the two angels and, turning from the tomb, saw Jesus standing there, though she knew not that) it was Jesus. It was then that Jesus spoke her name, and at the sound of his voice she understood, and she said, “Master.” What more can any of us say than that? Men Meet in Theater As an example of what can be done when a well planned program is followed, has been demonstrated in a contest conducted by the Christian Men Builders, Inc., a Bible class of men at the Third Christian church. Merle Sidener, advertising man, is the teacher of this class of men and has lor more than twenty-one years served the class. Each year the class has found its regular quarters too small to accommodate Easter attendance. And in connection with that fact they have made use of the Zaring theater for their Easter services and have filled it to overflowing. This year the membership workers have conducted a contest along the lines of increase in attendance for the month of March. The results show that Company B, of which Kenneth Busch is the captain, will be provided with reserved seats next Sunday morning at the theater. The Christian Men Biulders class had an attendance of 824 last Sunday. Jesse McClure, former president of the class, is in charge of the Easter arrangements. Drama to Be Given The young people of the University Heighths United Brethren church will present a one-act Easter drama, “Barabas,” at 7:30. The following are in the cast: Orvil Moort. Margaret Long. Hope Brown, Lloyd Hannon, Carl Koehrn, Frances Koffel and Ida Mae Good. Property chairman is Doris McKinney; costume chairman, Dorothy Nw’ell; makeup chairman, Jane Esmon, and directoress, Esther Parsons.
