CITY RESIDENTS FILE ENTRIES IN TITLE CONTEST ‘Riptide’ Slogan Drive Is Attracting Scores: Prizes Offered. The popular pastime in Indianapolis this week has been thinking up title-slogans for entry in the national “ ‘Riptide’ title-slogan contest" that is being sponsored by this paper in connection with the picture "Riptide,” for national cash prizes totaling SI,OOO. "Riptide” is the title of the newest picture of that glamorous and fascinating screen actress. Norma Shearer, which opened today at Loews Palace theater. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer executives, after previewing the picture, realized what a magnificent production it was and decided that to popularize the title the best thing they could do would be to offer large cash prizes as an award to those submitting the best descriptive titleslogans to distinguish the word "Riptide.” For instance, the following are examples of what is meant: "Riptide”—Faithful to desire! "Riptide”—Sweeps away conventions! "Riptide”—Emotion called desire! "Riptide”—Constancy takes a holiday! SSOO is First Award Not so hard, Is it? Think of winning a SSOO first prize or even of the other prizes, just by putting a few words on paper and sending them in. No long composition or essary. No research or probing for facts. Just a few simple moments of thought and perhaps you'll have struck it right. To give you a little inkling of what the story is about so that you may better be able to formulate your ideas. Miss Shearer, who won the Academy of Motion Picture Art award for the best performance of the year in The Divorcee,” appears as a ravishing beauty who, after leading a hectic life of fun, settles down to marriage with a nobleman whom she fascinated while he was in New York on business. They lead a happy home life for several years in London, but Lady Mary, which part Miss Shearer portrays, is not happy because Rexford, her husband, has not sufficient time to devote to her because of business obligations. Issue Is Decided She tries to decide whether it is fair of her to seek her own happi- ' ness and go out with other men, when by some queer quirk of fate, the whole issue is decided for her. You must understand, however, that Miss Shearer takes the role of a woman who* feels that if her acts make her happy, and bring happiness to someone else, then most certainly she has committed no wrong—because there is no wrong in happiness and laughter. this point on, there is a continual struggle in her heart between two men and the ideals each represent. The story closes in a

Presenting the resolution calling for a sweeping investigation of President Roosevelt's so-called “brain trust” was Representative Alfred L. Bulwinkle (above), of North Carolina. This action was aroused by the startling charges of Dr. William A. Wirt, Gary (Ind.) educator, that the "brain trusters" were plotting to establish a communistic form of government.
thrilling and most satisfying fashion and'is easily the supreme offering of Miss Shearer's magnetic career. Now that you know the story, sit down for a few moments and puzzle out a short sentence or catchline that best describes the emotion which "Riptide” refers to. Then sent it in to the “ ‘Riptide’ TitleSlogan Contest" editor in care of The Times. You may send in as many suggestions as you wish and every one is eligible except employes of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Producing Corporation, this newspaper, and theater, where "Riptide” will be shown locally. Local Awards Offered The prizes in the national campaign are SSOO for first. $250 second, $l5O third and SIOO for fourth for the best title-slogans in that order and are to be awarded according to the selection of the judges, whose word will be final. The judges are Miss Shearer, Irving C. Thalberg, associate producer of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studies, and Robert Montgomery, who plays the leading male role in the picture. In addition to the national prizes, the Palace theater is offering $lO for the winning local entry; $7.50 as second award; $5 for third, and fourth, $2.50. The contest closes Wednesday.
