Contract Bridge
BY W. E. M’KENNEY Secretary American Bridge League f~vNE of the rarest and most thrilling plays in contract is the grand coup. I have seen only a few triple or quadruple grand coups, as the combination of cards necessary in dummy usually is difficult to find. However, I had one sent to me that was played by Charles Shapiro of Brooklyn, N. Y. Here it is. South is justified in jumping to four hearts after North shows his club suit, as he has a fit in clubs with the king. The play, of course is the interesting part of this hand. West opened with the jack of diamonds, which Mr. Shapiro, in the South, won in dummy with the queen. He immediately returned a small heart and played the jack from his own hand. He then played the king of hearts and West showed out, discarding a diamond. A club was

THE heart is the world s most efficient pump. It pumps about five ounces of blood at every beat, or about 1,300 pints per hour, in the normal adult. In a day this would amount to close to 4,000 gallons. Next—Why is our view of the heavens slowly changing:?
discarded from dummy. East refused to win, playing the seven. a a tt EAST now had the ace and ten over Mr. Shapiro’s queen and \ eight. The only chance Mr. Shapiro ! had to make his contract was lit- ' erally to discard three of his trump. : So he led a small spade, winning in dummy with the ace. He returned the ace of diamonds and trumped with the deuce of hearts. The nine of spades then -was led and won in dummy with the king. The king of diamonds was returned and declarer trumped this good card with the three of hearts. Next he led a small club and won in dummy with the queen. Returning a small spade, he trumped with the six of hearts. Mr. Shapiro then cashed his king of clubs, played a small club, and won in dummy with the ace. Dummy was down to two spades and declarer held the queen and eight of hearts. East held nothing but the ace and ten of hearts. The eight of spades was led and East was forced to trump. If he had trumped with the ace. South’s queen would have been good, while j when he trumped with the ten, South over-trumped with the queen and lost the last trick to East’s ace of hearts. TARZAN THE INVINCIBLE
Tarzan of the Apes lay stretched upon his belly upon the back of Tantor, the elephant, his elbows upon the broad head, his chin in his hands. Futile had been his search for the spoor of La. Had the earth opened and swallowed her, she cculd not more effectively have gone.

THE INDIANAPOLIS TIMES
The peace and quiet that Tarzan was enjoying was suddenly shattered by the excited screams of a diminutive monkey. It was Nkima. Slender, hairy arms went around Tarzan's neck and Nkima hugged him. "What have you seen since I left you at opar?” demanded the ape-man.

“I have seen the Mangani dancing around the dead body of Sheets. I have seen the enemies of Tarzan marching back to their camp below the barrier cliffs of Opar, and the next morning I saw them march back into the jungle.”
—By Edgar Kice Burroughs
The ape-man slapped Tantor affectionately with his open palm in farewell, leaped to his feet and swung nimbly into the overhanging branches of a tree, while far away Zveri’s party, unsuccessful In Its raid on Opar, plodded back toward their base camp.
