Contract Bridge
IJY W. E. M’KENNEY Secretary American Bridge League HOW and when to recognize a squeeze play always is a perplexing question to any one. This interesting hand came up in a recent tournament, and the bidding actually took place as given below. Certainly plenty of bidding, but the partners did arrive at a grand slam. South’s bid of two spades is highly constructive. If East nad passed and South had bid the two spades, it would have been just a chancegiving bid. But, with East giving the chance by entering the bidding, South’s bid of two spades became almost equal to a three spade bid if East had passed. Os course. North immediately saw slam possibilities and showed the new feature of his hand by bidding diamonds. South supported the diamonds. North’s bid of hearts was

a cue bid, as was South’s bid of clubs. Now you can see that, as the hand goes down, after East opens the king of hearts, North has a losing duo trick. Most players would make the mistake of ruffing the losing heart immediately, but let us try to picture if there is a possible squeeze in the hand—and this is the way to work it. ana THIRST, you are going to discard -*• the deuce of clubs on the ace of hearts. All the diamonds are good. Then, if we run off all the spades, to what will the hand be down? Dummy will bear down to the ace and ten of clubs and the jack of hearts. Declarer will have a trump and the queen and deuce of clubs. If East happens to hold the king of clubs, you can see that the squeeze is possible, because he must try to hold the king and x of clubs and the queen of hearts. You then would lead your last trump, and East either would have to throw away his queen of hearts or discard the small club. So you can picture in your own hand whether the squeeze is possible, and if that is the only possible way to make your contract, then proceed to play the hand in that manner. Don’t make the mistake of ruffing the jack of hearts—keep it to embarrass East, so that he must protect the queen. (Copyright, 1934, by NEA Service, Inc.) Dunn-Eilers Again Jimmy Dunn and Sally Eilers will be brought together on the screen again in “Going Straight,” which Harry Lachman will direct. Ed Paramore is writing the screen story.

TARZAN THE INVINCIBLE
From a group of priestesses at the right of Oah’s throne, a girl, just come into womanhood, regarded the prisoner through half-closed eyes, and the younger heart of Nao palpitated to the thoughts that this strange warrior engendered within her.

When Oah had finished speaking, Colt was led away, quite ignorant of the fact that he had been listening to his death sentence. His guards flung him into a cell, within the entrance of a tiamel leading from the sacrificial conn to the pits beneath the city.

Through the small window in his cell Wayne Colt looked out upon the inner court of the Temple at Opar. He saw the altar standing in the court. The brown stains upon it and upon the pavement told him what the unintelligible words of Oah had been unable to convey.
—By Edgar Rice Burroughs
There could be no mistaking the purpose of that altar when viewed in connection with the grinning skulls of former human sacrifices, which stared through eyeless sockets upon him from their niches in the surrounding walls. At the sight Colt’s heart sank within his breast.
