Contract Bridge
BY W. E. M’KENNEY Secretary American Bridge League TODAY'S hand .presents an interesting bidding problem, as you will notice there is a great deal of bidding before game is reached. In other words, the distribution is well shown. While several pairs arrived at a game contract with this hand, it was surprising how many pairs were defeated. One pair managed to go down three tricks at four hearts, which is somewhat of a problem in itself. North’s bid of one diamond in third position simply can be a leaddirecting bid. However, when South makes a one-over-one forcing bid of one heart, and North bids one spade, he now begins to show the true color of his hand. South goes to two hearts, show-

ing a good five-card heart suit. North bids three diamonds, showing the distribution of the hand. Now, when South goes to three no trump, North knows that the club suit is not especially strong or South w r ould have got into no trump earlier. Therefore, North properly carries the contract to four hearts. a a a Est TEST opens the singleton nine ’ ' of diamonds. Declarer should not allow the trick to ride to the queen, since the nine is marked as a singleton and South can see that he has a home for his losing diamond on one of dummy’s good spades. Therefore, the ace must be played and the ace of spades cashed immediately. The ten of spades is led over to dummy and won with the jack. The queen of spades is played, and the losing queen of diamonds is discarded. Os course, the declarer has several losing clubs, so an attempt now must be made to ruff at least one of them. The queen of clubs is played, East winning with the king and now, regardless of what East does, the contract is made. The best defense, possibly, is to return a heart. South will go in with the ten to retain the lead in his own hand, and then will lead a club, ruffing in dummy with the ace of hearts. The king of spades then should be returned and, whether or not East trumps with the king of hearts, the declarer discards the losing nine of clubs. Now his only other losing trick is his remaining club. (Copyright. 1D34, by NEA Service, Inc.) The deepest salt mine in the world is said to be near Berlin, Germany, and is 4.175 feet deep.

Romero was forced to drop back a few steps to prevent the Oparians from surrounding him. At the same instant he saw a hurled club strike the American on the head. The man dropped like a log, and instantly his body was covered by the terrible little men of Opar.

Miguel Romero realized that Colt was lost, and even if not now already dead, he, single handed, could not rescue him. If he escaped with his own life he would be fortunate, and so, keeping up a steady fire, he fell back toward the aperture in the middle wall.
