Roy Helton Here is a Bertrand Zadig drawing of Roy Helton, author of “Lonesome Water’’ and whose latest novel, “Nitchey Tilley’’ has just been published by Harper & Brothers. a a tt BY WALTER HICKMAN * INTEREST in modern poetry, and especially verse which reflects the suffering of men and women during these changing days of the social order, is assuming tremendous proportions. So intense and sincere is this interest in such verse that men and women are bringing to this department books of serve of their favorite poets. A. T. Morgan, 6020 Carrollton avenue, just left my desk, leaving his own copy of the poems of Angela Morgan under the title of “Crucify Me.” He asked me to review’ these poems because the author has a real message for the people of today. I have read many of her poems before, but not all that are contained in “Crucify Me,” w’hich is published by The Poetry Publishers and sells for $1.50. This book is dedicated to “all who suffer,” and yet the verse is not overburdened with the blues, but rather is a challenge for better living conditions for all people. The poem, “Crucify Me,” which is the first poem in the collection, undoubtedly is the most tremondous and important thing she has written. In this poem she prays to be “utterly mocked and crucified” and then to be resurrected so she may cry out against all injustice. In her own words: “God. grant me a cry so mighty. It will shake down the fortresses of hate. Outroar the cannon and the bursting bombs. And sweep all battleships from off the seas, forever. God, give me a shout so terrible. Even as the rage of the sea. Even as the blast of a hurricane blowing. Blowing, blowing, till the steel-bound doors unhinge and the vaults of the world fly open. And the grain and the gold come pouring out For the starving children of earth. For the pitiful, shrunken, ragged men of the pavements. Stretched on the gratings, still as the dead In the cold of the night.” Here is ambition as lofty as the heavens. Here is a social program expressed in verse W’hich challenges the world. This poem deserves to live and it is no wonder that those who read Miss Morgan’s poetry desire to pass on her poetry to all readers. a AS powerful as that verse is, the cne that continually haunts my memory is “The Trees That Died in the War.” Here is a remarkable protest

against war, done in anew way and from a different viewpoint. Miss Morgan asks simply the question—how do we award the trees that give us pleasure with their lavish leafy treasure? A war comes along by “hatred and shells and burning” bring death to these trees. She asks if the trees will pity us and if *he trees would bring us peace. Many people who studied carefully the scenes of distinction of the World war which recently were published in The Indianapolis Times, thought of this short little poem. Here is just one masterpiece of verse among a collection which is golden. Miss Morgan walks arri talks with men and women of today and records what she sees and hears. She has something worthwhile to say and she says it honestly and beautifully. NAVY AND PHILIPPINE BILLS READY TO SIGN Rainey and Garner to Affix Signatures Today. By United Prise WASHINGTON. March 23.—0n1y the formality of signature remained today to complete enactment of vital bills to put the United States fleet on the way to treaty strength and to give the Philippine Islands another chance at independence.
