Contract Bridge

BY \VM. E. M’KENNEY Secretary American Bridge League THE most undesirable partner at contract is not the one who will miss bidding a game or a slam occasionally, but the one who. by careless play, will jeopardize the contract. I was surprised at the number of players, in a recent duplicate game, who failed to make three no trump on today s hand. North, with his two kings, is justified in taking the original bid of one no trump to two. West's opening lead was the seven of hearts. The six was played from dummy and East played the queen. Declarer refused to win this trick and held up until the third round, winning then with the ace, and discarding a small spade from dummy.

THE resistar.ee to a ship on the surface is mostly caused by the j waves thrown up during its passage through the water. When a submarine travels beneath the surface no waves are produced, and the only resistance is “skin friction.” NEXT—When did the United States patent office begin numbering patents serially?

cpHE ace of diamonds w r as played a and West played the jack. The declarer now led a small diamond. When West played the queen, it w r as w'on in dummy with the king. The careless player might make the mistake of finessing the spade at this point, but that would be jeopardizing the contract, as West is marked with two good hearts, and the opposition already has j cashed tw r o heart tricks. The declarer has four club tricks if the club suit breaks, a heart, a spade, and tw r o diamonds—eight in all. Why not simply establish the ' eight of diamonds and not bother with the spade finesse? Declarer next should play the nine of diamonds and, w r hen East wins with the ten. a spade should be discarded. Now’, of course, East will return a spade, but the finesse should be refused. The declarer should go right up with the ace, cash the ace of clubs, and then lead a small club to dummy’s king. The eight of diamonds is cashed and the contract is made—all South has to lose now is a spade. (Copyright, 1934. by NEA Service. Inc.) WILEY TO GET POST Navy Airman to Be Named Commander of Macon. Tony, the Filipino, turned to see if his companions were following him. They had halted and were standing with blanched faces listening. Then Ivitch turned and started back toward the outer wall at a run. Zveri took after him with Dorsky at his heels.

“Why go in there?” growled Ivitch. “We should only be killed like Colt and Romero.” “If we are killed the cause is lost,” said Dorsky. “But the gold!” exclaimed Zveri. “Think of the gold!” “How about our comrades?" asked Tony. “Are you going to try to rescue them?”

“Not the Mexican,” said Zveri, “and as for the American we shall have his funds as long as we can keep the news of his death from getting back to the coast. Besides,” he said with a sneer, “I can’t do it alone.” “I will go with you,” said Tony.

“Little good two of us can accomplish,” mumbled Zveri, and then in one of his sudden rages, ha advanced menacingly upon the Filipino. “Who do you think you are, anyway?” he demanded. "I am in command here. When I want your advice I’ll ask for it!”
