15V w. E. M'KEXXEY Secretary American Bridge League T RECEIVE many letters in a year’s time asking me, “If you pick up a hand containing no picture cards, may yoy ask for anew deal?’’ Os course, you can not do that. The fact that you have no high cards simply is somebody else’s good luck, and the thing for v you to do is to realize that it may be your partner’s. Don’t become discouraged on an apparently worthless hand—sit in there and play bridge, and do the best you can with the cards you get. The fact that W. J. Roberts of Cleveland does not receive high cards does not prevent him usually from getting into the bidding. Here is an example of a hand that he played recently at four hearts. West's opening lead was the ten

I of spades, which Mr. Roberts, in the ! South, won in dummy with the ace. He immediately cashed his ace, king, and queen of clubs and then led a small spade, trumping in his own hand with the four of hearts. a a a X TEXT he played a low diamond, and when West played the six, he finessed the nine, East winning with the queen and returning the king of spades, which Mr. Roberts trumped with the six of hearts. Mr. Roberts now led the three of diamonds. When West played the eight, he got a good reading on the West hand and refused to go up with the king in dummy, playing the seven spot. East was forced to win the trick with the ace. East returned the queen of spades, which Mr. Roberts trumped with the nine of hearts and it held the trick. West discarding a diamond The seven of hearts was played next, declarer going right up with the ace in dummy, catching East’s queen and the hand was made. All Mr. Roberts had to do was to lead the king of diamonds from dummy, which East trumped with his good king of hearts. As the jack and three of hearts were in dummy and the ten of hearts and five of diamonds were in Mr. Roberts’ hand, he was bound to win the last two tricks. (Copyright, 1934, by NEA Service. Inc.) Once again Peter Zveri stood before the walls cf Opar, and once again the courage of his black soldiers melted before the menace of the weird cries within. The ten warriors, who had not been to Opar before, halted trembling as the bloodcurdling screams arose.

Miguel Romero once more lea the invaders, and directly behind him was Wayne Colt. According to the plan the blacks were to have followed closely behind them. But the blacks would not enter the opening of the outer wall, so demoralized were they by the screams.

“In with you, you cowards!” cried Zveri. menacing the blacks with his revolver in an effort to force them into the opening. One of the warriors raised his rifle threateningly. “Put away your weapon, white man,” he said. “We will fight men, but no demons.”
—By Edgar Kice Burroughs
Zveri lowered his pL>to! and commenced to plead with the warriors, promising them rewards that amounted to riches to them if they would accompany the whites into the city. But the volunteers were obdurate—nothing could induce them to venture into Opar.
