COMPANY UNION DOOMED. SAYS LABOR LEADER Organizations to Be Ended by Wagner Measure, Forum Hears. "Company unions, ninety-nine out cf 100 of which are formed through coercion, are doomed under the NRA Alex Gordon, labor leader •and member of the regional labor boara for the national recovery act, told the Butler university open forum last night. He cited a recent speech of General Smedlev D. Butler declaring that company unions are largely employer-dominated and pretty much sham. “Passage of the Wagner labor bill will outlaw the company union forever " Mr. Gordon said. “That is proper because there is nothing voluntary about such organizations and they do not represent the real interest of the employe. NRA Principles Praised “General Johnson knows that and has said so. The company union Is doomed and every one will be better off when they are gone.” Principles of the NRA were explained and praised by Mr. Gordon. He said that the law itself does not forbid the formation of company unions, although section 7-A is designed to foster real unionization among employes themselves and truly representative collective bargaining. Strikes also are not entirely forbidden by the law, but with the setting up of the regional labor beards the strike need not be resorted to in order to settle disputes over wages, hours or conditions of work, he declared. A. F. of L. Defended NRA has raised wages and shortened hours for the unorganized common labor and the organized skilled workers will be in a position to demand wage restorations for themselves soon, he said. They have been too busy aiding the unorganized and getting the unemployed back to work to look to their own interests thus far. Mr. Gordon explained. He defended the policies of the American Federation of Labor as being neither conservative nor radical, but “practical.” For many years, Mr. Gordon has been legislative agent for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen. one of the standard railway unions affiliated with the American Federation. 2,000 IN COUNTY FACE OLD AGE PENSION DELAY Payments Impossible Before May 15, Says Marker After Parley. Marion county applicants for old age pensions will not receive pension checks until May 15 at the earliest, Ernest K. Marker, president of the board of county commissioners, said today. The announcement followed a conference yesterday of county officials with Otto Deluse, national secretary and Indiana chairman of the old age pension committee of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, sponsors of old age pension legislation. Mr. Deluse urged rapid completion of investigation of pension applications by the four investigators appointed by the board of commissioners. Approximately 2.000 persons will qualify for pensions, Mr. Marker stated. County commissioners asked that $400,000 be appropriated for pensions this year. The county council cut this figure to $200,000 and the county tax adjustment board fixed the total at $90,000. A breed of sheep, having no wool on the face and legs, has been developed by South Dakota State college.
