Contract Bridge
Solution to Previous Contract Problem BY W. E. M’KENNEY Secretary American Bridge League HERE Ls another of those big high card trick hands. Today’s South hand contains five and onehalf primary tricks, but before making an original two bid, let's count the losers. There are two losing hearts and possibly two losing clubs. When making an original twobid. you should not have more than three losing cards—the rest should be sure winners. If it is a minor suit in which you are making the two bid, you should not have more than two losing cards. Naturally. North must pass after West's overcall of two clubs. South’s bid of three spades shows partner that he needs only about one in-card in North's hand to go game. While I do not generally like to have my partner pass this jump bid. N rth did the proper thing in this rase, as he has no in-cards

and nothing that will be of any assistance to his partner. u a a POME players might make the mistake, on the second round, of making a constructive bid of two j diamonds over two clubs, hoping that this bid would force partner to keep the bidding open. But the danger is that partner may have four diamonds and, believing that he now has a fit with your hand, will support it, and then you never are able to get into his hand. West, naturally, refuses to lead away from his ace-queen of clubs and open the king of hearts, which South wins with the ace and then picks up the outstanding trump. He then cashes the ace, king and queen of diamonds. His only hope for an extra trick now is to try to throw' West into the lead, and force him to lead up to the king of clubs. But West wisely plays the ten of hearts on the next trick. East must overtake the trick with the jack to lead a club —otherwise,, four-odd would be made. Many players might make the mistake of not overtaking their partner's ten with the jack, but this, indeed, would be a careless play, as partner had refused to open the suit that he bid, which shows that he must have held a tenace position in it. A dozen brawny men leaped upon La simultaneously. La tried to defend herself. Slashing right and left with her dagger, she drew blood more than once before they overpowered her; but at length they succeeded in wrenching the blade from her and securing her wrists.
