REICH EMBASSY CONCERNED BY N. Y. MEETING Protest to State Department to No Avail, Query Discloses. By L tilled Pr< $ WASHINGTON, March 9—Anticipating possible proteats from the German government over the “conTiction" of Chancellor Adolf Htler of “’crimes against civilization'’ at a mock trial at New York, state department officials today emphasized the private and unofficial character of that meeting. William Phillips, undersecretry of state, in answer to questions, said the German embassy here had made no protest since the mass meeting was held at Madison Square Garden. At the German embassy, however, it was learned that Ambassador Hans Luther had protested to Mr. Phillips prior to the meeting. Luther objected to the meeting on the ground that its purpose was to attack the head of a government with which the United States maintains friendly relations. Mr. Phillips, replying, pointed out to the ambassador that for the administration to attempt to interfere would violate the right of free speech guaranteed by the American Constitution. The German embassy was particularly disturbed over the meeting it was learned, because of the prominence of many of those taking part in it. These included: former Governor Alfred E. Smith of New York; Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia of New York; Professor Raymond Moley, former assistant secretary of state, a friend of President Roosevelt and former member of the so-called administration brain trust; Senator Millard E. Tydings (Dem., Md.), and other prominent men. The mangroves of the tropical coasts are land builders, since their stilt-like roots offer places for mud and drift material to lodge, gradually building up a soil.
