DILLINGER IN CHICAGO AREA. POLICE FEEL Gunman Is Identified by Gas Station Attendant as Desperado. (Continued From Page One) the driver warned the young man, “or I'll close it forever for you.” Thoroughly frightened. Bowers tried to read the mud-covered license plates as he stepped from the car, but was unsuccessful. He went to a filling station and found a friend who kept a scrap book of the ‘ terror mob." Bowers picked out the picture of Dihinger and identified mm as the man who had given him the lift. While the far flung police hunt was carried on with little result, investigation into the escape of Dillinger from Crown Point jail last Saturday was waged more successfully by investigators woiking under direction of Philip Lutz Jr., attor-ney-general. The investigators, it was learned, are scrutinizing the official acts of Judge William J. Murray of the Lake county criminal court. Another startling development was the charge that Ernest Blunk, fingerprint expert who was kidnaped by Dillinger, decoyed at least one of the special jail guards into a cell and locked him in a few minutes before Dillinger made his escape aided only by a wooden pistol. Blunk. an appointee of Judge Murray, failed to appear yesterday for a hearing before Judge Murray, it was learned, although Edward Barce, deputy attorney-general, had ordered him to be present. He is at liberty under a personal bond said to have been approved by Judge Murray. Decoyed into Cell Blunk was further implicated in the fantastic escape of the desperado by testimony of Matt Brown, special guard at the jail, said to be a highly respected citizen of Crown Point. Brown testified that Blunk decoyed him into a cell and locked him in. according to the attorney-gen-eral. The deputy attorney-general, said that according to the evidence given him by Brown, it was learned that Blunk had appeared at an outer office where he (Brown) was seated shortly after reporting for work about 9:30 Saturday morning. “We re ready for you now,” Blunk is alleged to have said to Brown. Blunk, according to the evidence, led the way down a jail corridor, and stopping before a cell said, “This is the place.” Brown said he entered the cell and the door was suddenly slammed and locked “before I had a chance to realize that I had been decoyed into the cell.” Brown went on to testify, according to Mr. Barce, that Dillinger had appeared a few? minutes later in the cell block, brandishing the famous wooden pistol, and crying, “I did it with this!” Murray Refuses Removal When an information was filed against Blunk, Judge Murray is alleged to have said “somebody has “ gone otf half-cocked.” according to Mr. Barce. Judge Murray refused to allow the transfer of Dillinger from the Lake county jail to the Indiana state prison, according to the attorneygeneral. Police from East Chicago, Hammond and Gary had been called to the Crown Point jail to escort the desperado to Michigan City, it was learned, but removal had been refused by Judge Murray, according to the attorney-general. The only charge definitely made against Sheriff Lillian Holley thus far by the attorney-general has been that of gross negligence in conduct of the Lake county jail.
